First Swan Powerboat: 55-Knot, 40-foot, Swan Shadow

Nautor Swan just announced the debut of its first powerboat, the 40-foot Swan Shadow, with the same elegant, minimalist design that the famed Finnish builder has been using in its sailboats for generations.

The new Swan Shadow is a bit faster than previous Swans. Indeed, with optional triple 350-hp Mercury Verados outboards, it tops out at 55 knots.

Leonard Ferragamo, the Nautor Swan president, says the company had been thinking about making a powerboat for years, “but we always resisted this temptation until we really felt we had something really special and unique to present.”

“We wanted to create something sporty and fun, without compromising the elegance customers have grown to expect from a Swan,” said Jarkko Jamsen, who designed the new boat. He said the interior styling is the same design that Swan uses on its superyachts.

The Shadow does have a cabin below that can sleep two people. An owner also can order a extra cabin forward to hold crew.

The boat has a unique platform aft that surrounds the three outboards. It can be reconfigured to serve as a swim platform or even as a passarelle. The stern is open. The walkaround deck is all on one level without any steps.

Another unique feature: The extended hardtop can be ordered with telescoping roof pillars and moving glass panels to create a convertible cabin for privacy or protection from the weather.

The hull has twin steps and a 20-degree deadrise aft. Standard power comes from three 225-hp Mercury Verado outboards, with options running up to three 350-hp Verados.
