Sergio Davi Reaches Cape Verde on RIB

After a brief interruption with Covid, Sergio Davi, the 65-year-old Italian professional yacht captain, is back on track with his 10,000 mile Ocean to Ocean RIB Adventure from Sicily to Los Angeles.

A few days ago, Davi completed the most recent leg of his trip, taking 44 hours to run the 840 nm from Grand Canary Island to Cape Verde, averaging a little more than 19 knots on his 36-foot Nuova Jolly Prince RIB, Aretusa Explorer. Antonio Aiello, the owner of Nuova Jolly (pictured at left, above, with Davi), was along for this leg. Davi said they had “very good weather and marine conditions.”

When he left Palermo on Dec. 15, Davi hoped to reach Los Angeles in about 100 days. But when he arrived in Grand Canary, he tested positive for Covid, and he had to self-isolate in a hotel for several days. He still hopes to land in L.A. toward the end of February.

During Davi’s stay in Grand Canary, technicians from Suzuki went over the RIBs two DF300B dual prop outboards, replacing the props so they could handle the weight and displacement of the extra fuel for the crossing to Cape Verde and then the long 1,800-nm leg from Cape Verde to French Guyana in South America. The boat will carry 1,717 gallons for the trans-Atlantic leg. Other techs from Simrad also tested all their electronics on board.

Davi is no stranger to Atlantic adventures. In 2019, he cruised from Sicily to New York on another Nuova Jolly RIB. On this trip, he’ll collect sea water to measure the state of the ecosystem for two Italian universities. You can follow his trip here:
