Legacy Building New Outboard Pocket Cruiser

Legacy Yachts in Ohio is working on a new Legacy 12, the first model in its new Legacy Mark 11 Series, a 45-knot, twin-outboard pocket cruiser with a Down East heritage. Legacy hopes to introduce the new 12 at the Miami show next February. It has an LOA of 39′ 4″ and a beam of 12′ 3.”

About two years ago, Seattle Yachts bought Tartan, the sailboat company that had acquired Legacy earlier. Seattle formed a new company, Marine Manufacturing Group, LLC, to make both brands under Phil Friedman, the former president of Palmer Johnson, and moved the plant to Painesville, Ohio. Legacy had been making 32- 36- and 42-foot models.

It’s not a surprise that the new Legacy, with its 60-year history, offers a new twist on a lobster boat theme. JC Espinosa, the superyacht designer, softened and updated Legacy’s traditional lines for the new 12. The new boat even has hull extensions aft that hide the outboards when viewed from the side. Legacy also extended the running surface aft to provide buoyancy for the outboards.

The Legacy 12 will be available with either twin 300-hp Mercury or Yamaha outboards, providing a 30-knot cruising speed. You also can order Cox diesel outboards if you want.

The boat has a moderate-V hull, with infused Epoxy construction and strategic carbon fiber reinforcements. It has space for an optional Seakeeper gyro-stabilizer.

You can order it with one or two cabins below. The owner’s cabin is forward, with a queen-sized berth, all behind two pocket doors for privacy. A lounging and reading area on the port side can be converted to a second cabin, with twin berths, if an owner wants to make room for children or guests. The head with stall shower is opposite, to starboard.

The cockpit has a full-width lounge and an adjustable dining table seating six. The cockpit also has an outdoor BBQ, fridge and ice maker to help with entertaining. Overhead protection comes from an electric sunshade.

The full galley is on the bridge deck, aft of the starboard-side helm seat. A settee is to port. There’s an opening skylight overhead, and a sliding glass door aft leads to the cockpit. We’ll have more details later. Read  more:
