Greenline 48 Fly: Hybrid Family Cruiser

The Greenline 48 Fly, equipped with solar panels, electric motors, lithium batteries and two traditional Volvo 220-hp diesels, is a hybrid family cruiser that lets owners choose how they want to spend their time afloat.

Under diesel power, the Greenline 48 tops out at 17.4 knots, a comfortable cruising speed for when you want to put some easy miles under your belt. At 15 knots, it has a range of 279 nm. (The Slovenian company says that at 5.1 knots, the range climbs to a staggering 1,668 nm, but I don’t know many people who want to cruise at 5.1 knots for a very long time.)

Under purely electric power, the Greenline cruises at 4 to 5 knots, and it can do this for about two hours with fully charged batteries. This speed won’t get you anywhere very fast, of course, but it is meant to let you explore a new anchorage or waterway for a while, producing almost no noise at all and certainly no emissions. You also can turn to electric power while waiting for a bridge to open or for just maneuvering around a marina or fuel dock.

The new Greenline has two large solar panels on the main roof that collect power to store in three lithium-polymer battery packs in the engine room. The solar panels are just forward of the flybridge, which is set fairly far back. Each battery can carry 11.5 kWh. The batteries power a pair of 14kW Mahle electric motors.

The boat is designed for single-level living on the main deck. The side decks are protected overhead and lead safely to the foredeck, which has a sun pad large enough for three people. There’s also a table and a folding soft top for shade.

All the way aft, the swim platform has pop-up chocks to hold a small tender. The aft deck has a teak table and a long bench seat for four people. Push a button on the hull-side (or the remote) and an electrically operated shade covers the entire area.

Stairs lead up to the flybridge and the upper helm station. A C-shaped lounge is on the starboard side, seating six or more. A sun pad is aft, while a small galley with a sink, electric grill and fridge are to port.

From the aft deck, a bi-fold door leads to the salon. The cruising galley is aft on the starboard side, with an electric grill set into the countertop. A full-size fridge is across to port. You can release a latch on the aft starboard window so it will swing down and open to the cockpit, creating a serving bar to the aft deck.

The salon has seating on both sides forward of the galley, with a table on the port side for dining. The helm is forward to starboard, with a two-person seat, a flip-down bolster, and both a sliding window and a door opening to the starboard side deck.

Below, two identical guest staterooms are to port and starboard, both with en suite  heads. The master stateroom is forward, with two options: one double berth or two single berths in a V shape that can be pushed together. The master head with sink and toilet is to starboard; the shower is in a separate compartment to port.
