Riviera, the large Australian builder, just launched its new 645 SUV, the flagship of it’s all-purpose SUV fleet, and it will make its U.S. debut at the Fort Lauderdale show, starting Oct. 26. With its low profile, enormous foredeck and imaginative mezzanine deck connecting to the salon and the cockpit, this latest Riviera seems ready for some serious – and fun – cruising days ahead.

Over the past 40 years, Riviera has built 5,700 yachts of various sizes and shapes. More than 170 of them have been in its SUV line, designed to be versatile, all-purpose vessels, similar to their namesakes on land. The SUV fleet now range from 39 to 64 feet.

Standard power on the new 645 is 1,300-hp MAN V8 diesels, producing a top speed of 32 knots. Optional power: twin 1,550-hp MAN V12s. The engine room is vast, with stand-up headroom.

The outside spaces on the 645 are impressive. The foredeck has a U-shaped sofa with seating for a dozen, and that’s a lot, even for a 64-foot yacht. All the way aft, the teak-decked cockpit has more seating, a barbeque, fridge and freezer and access to the teak swim platform.

A mezzanine deck, protected by the hard top overhang above, has sliding glass doors that open to connect it to the cockpit and the salon, all on the same level, making one large indoor/outdoor living space.

The gourmet galley is aft, and the salon has luxurious touches, including a leather lounge with an ottoman, a foldaway dining table, and quilted-leather seats for three at the helm. There are twin sliding sun roofs. A pantograph door on the port side opens to the side deck.

Below, you can order the Riviera 645 with three or four staterooms, with three heads. In the four-cabin version, the full-beam master amidships features a walk-around queen bed, a chaise on the port side, an entertainment system and even a safe. The VIP cabin is forward, and the other two cabins have two berths each. In an optional layout, a lower lounge replaces one of the guest staterooms.

Bridge clearance for the new SUV is just 16’ 6”, making it particularly attractive for cruising the ICW or the Great Loop.
