Nordhavn Fleet Heads to Sea of Cortez

A small fleet of five Nordhavns left the company’s headquarters on Dana Point, California, yesterday, starting a two-week cruise down the coast to Mexico’s Baja California and the Sea of Cortez.

The boats are scheduled to stop in Ensenada, Turtle Bay, Cabo San Lucas, La Paz, and Laredo along the way, all prime cruising destinations for boat owners on the West Coast and around the world. The crews include many Nordhavn staffers, starting with  vice president Jim Leishman, who said the trip was good way to end the year. “It’s been a couple of very busy years for us,” he said. “I want this trip to be all about fun.”

“We’re no different from any other buyer out there who just  wants to jump on their Nordhavn and go,” said James Leishman, who is Jim’s son and a broker who lead the company to one of its most productive years in the past decade.

Jim Leishman will lead the fleet, called the Nordhavn Convey to the Sea of Cortez, on the Nordhavn 57 Grande that he and Jeff Leishman, the company’s design chief, and Dan Streech, the company’s president, bought last spring.

The other boats are two new Nordhavn 80s, Lady Di and Ourtheroy; a 68 named Dragon, and a 63 named True Blue. They’ll be posting pictures and videos along the way.

On a personal note, the Cortez convoy brings to mind the historic 2004 Nordhavn Atlantic Rally, where 18 boats cruised 3,500 nm from Fort Lauderdale to Gibraltar, with stops in Bermuda and the Azores. I was the editorial director of Yachting at the time, and joined the fleet in the Azores for the last leg, some 977 nm to Gibraltar, on Jim Leishman’s lead boat, the Nordhavn 57 Atlantic Escort. That cruise remains a milestone in my boating life. And I’ve never seen anyone so happy and relieved as Leishman was after all 18 boats were tied up safely in Gibraltar.
