Sirena Reveals Hybrid-Power 48 Coupe

Sirena Yachts, the upscale Turkish builder, just unveiled its new Sirena 48 hybrid coupe with silent electric power.

The Sirena 48 actually made its world debut at the Cannes Yachting Festival in September. The entry-level yacht in Sirena’s fleet, which goes up to 164 feet, the original 48 had a flybridge configuration and traditional diesel engines for power.

In the new version, Sirena has remodeled the superstructure to make it into a coupe layout, complete with solar panels integrated into the coach roof. It also has a hybrid power train for quiet and eco-friendly cruising.

The core DNA of the original 48 remains unchanged. It’s still a three-cabin yacht. But now the coupe-style coach roof gives it a more sporty look as well as providing more light for the salon. It also reduces the yacht’s weight, lowers its center of gravity, reduces windage and improves performance and range.

“The hardtop design is particularly well suited to the hybrid drive system,” said Cagin Gene, Sirena’s CEO, “and offers a remarkable solution in terms of aesthetics while maximizing the number of solar panels.”

The 48 coupe is driven by a pair of 213 kW electric motors, providing a top speed of 14 knots. Cruising speed is 6 to 6.5 knots. In full electric mode, the Sirena draws from a 78.2 kWh battery pack to cruise about 30 nm before switching to generator  power. This means the yacht can leave a harbor or anchorage at a low and silent speed. For a higher speed and more range, two generators provide enough electric power to drive the boat and recharge the batteries.

With the generators running, the Sirena’s range is about 200 nm at 6.5 knots. With battery and diesel power, the range goes up to 350 nm at 6.5 knots.

Gene says the hybrid system can reduce fuel consumption by up to 35 percent, and cut maintenance costs from 10 to 15 percent a year.
