Tyde Making 48-foot, e-Foiling Cruiser

Tyde, the German startup that works with BMW, just released images of its new Open, a 48-foot sports cruiser that it says is the world’s largest foiling electric recreational boat.

The Open is the production version of the prototype Icon that Tyde revealed at the Cannes show last September. Tyde plans to start delivering the Open in the fall.

Powered by two 100-kW Torqeedo Deep Blue electric motors, the Open starts to fly, or foil, at about 17 knots. It tops out at 30 knots, and has a range of 50 nm at 25 knots.

Its zero-emissions drivetrain includes a 400-kWh bank of BMW i3 batteries that power the Torqeedos. The foils are controlled by computers and then fly over the surface with minimal water resistance that does not require a lot of power. The foils run under the waves; the hull rides above them.

As a result, the Open should provide a smooth ride. It also should be quiet and vibration free. The downside is that the fixed foils draw 6’ 4” in displacement mode, or any time the Open is not foiling.

Tyde worked with BMW’s Designworks on the Open. It has a reverse-angled bow with a sharp entry that then flares out to provide room for seating in the bow. Two seats face the helm, which is protected by a wraparound windshield. There’s sleeping space for two below, with a TV, worktable and a head and shower in what Tyde calls a prismatic cabin design.

Up top, the deck is flush with a walkaround design. The galley and a large seating area are protected by the hardtop. A sun pad on the aft deck is large enough for two people; a swim platform provides access to water sports. The hardtop is covered by solar panels to provide for sustainable cruising.

Specs.; LOA: 48’3”; Beam: 7’7”; Draft: 6’4”; Disp.: 23,000 lbs.; Fuel: NA; Water: 29 gals.; Power; 2×100-kW Torqeedo electric motors.
