Selene 72: Big Blue-Water Cruiser

The Selene 72 Ocean Explorer ticks a lot of the boxes for safe and comfortable blue-water cruising.

Designed by Guido de Groot in the Netherlands and Howard Chen and his Selene Design Studio in Taiwan, the big Selene has a modern-styled raised pilothouse, Portuguese bridge and high bulwarks for safety, wide side decks, large side windows to provide lots of interior light, and an upper flybridge. The aft deck and side decks are covered for weather protection.

Doors on both sides of the pilothouse open to the side decks and the Portuguese bridge, which has a large settee set across its forward edge. The pilothouse has highly raked forward windows to shed water and the sun’s glare, and to provide extra headroom.

The Selene 72 has a full displacement hull for maximum fuel efficiency in the 7- to 12-knot range. Power comes from twin 405-hp Cummins diesels, although a buyer can order a larger single engine. Top speed with the Cummins is over 11 knots. The hull has solid lamination under the waterline.

For accommodations, the Selene 72 has six cabins and five heads. The lower deck has three guest cabins, including a luxurious master suite set ful- beam amidships. Two cabins and one head serving as crew quarters are all the way aft, accessible from the swim platform.

In the salon, a home-sized C-shaped lounge is aft, the dining area is forward, and the large galley is set between the salon and the pilothouse. The interior is built for comfortable living on a long cruise; it has superyacht-quality joinery and fit and finish.

Selene’s Ocean Explorer line has six models, from 60 to 128 feet. Over the years, the boats have earned a reputation as efficient and seaworthy long-range cruisers. They are made in China.
