The Helmsman family of cruising trawlers, now numbering seven models from 31 to 54 feet, has remained true to the trawler ethos from day one. They build semi-displacement cruisers, based on working trawler designs, that are seaworthy, simple to maintain, easy to handle and possess very long range capabilities.
The 43E which is now in a second generation, evolved from the highly popular Helmsman 38, hence the E in its branding. By adding almost seven feet and increasing the beam, the new 43 had a much more spacious salon and bridge and enough volume forward for two full cabins with heads.
This is what many 38 owners and potential customers were asking for. A full keel, semi-displacement hull with soft bilges and a very stable ride driven by a helfty, single diesel that can power at 7 or 8 knots for a thousand miles or more.
Plus the 43E has room for the owners and another couple who come along for an extended cruise. This last feature, was high on everyone’s list as the evolution was conceived as were the enlarged dinette in the salon and the larger small dinette on the bridge.
Even the flybridge benefitted from the extra length. You can fit a 3.10 meter dinghy on the boat deck with a bigger outboard which gives you a lot more range and keeps your backside drier.

By sticking close to the working boat heritage that is the essence of cruising trawlers, Helmsman produces squarely honest boats that are true to their roots. The 43E is a shining example of that dedication and commitment.
