Here’s a boat or water toy that looks like a lot of fun, an electric foiling canoe. This one-man craft called the Pegasus is powered by an electric motor that drives a prop on the bottom of the back foil and runs silently.
When the boat is sitting still in the water is is quite stable, unlike a canoe, because the foils are deep uinder the hull and the t-foils act a stabilizers. Once you start getting underway, the sensation is much like that of riding a bike. It takes just a couple of minutes to get the hang of it.
The foils are articulated and attached to a sensor wand fitted on the back of the front strut. This controls an elevator flap on the back end of the front foil. As you gain speed, the wand adjusts the elevator which enhances the lift to get the boat up onto the foils.
Once clear of the water and foiling, the control wand swings forward to a neutral position which flattens off the elevator and levels off the boat.
And voila, you are basically flying over the waves with very little sensation of boating on the water’s surface. And now that you are foiling, you use your weight and the two steering handles attached to the rudder on the front foil to shape your direction.
Powered by two Torquedo batteries, the Pegasus can get up to 30 knots and will run for roughly two and half hours at 20 knots. So, you have a range of nearly 50 miles which sounds like a lot of fun.
