You Can See More Cruising Boats than Ever at the Miami Shows Next Week. Here Are Our Reviews of 37 of Them By Peter A. Janssen It would be hard to find a larger or more impressive display of new cruising boats anywhere in the world than what you can see in Miami next week. At the ever-larger Miami International Boat Show on Virginia Key, you’ll find more than 1,400 boats (including many more in the 40- to 80-foot range), while at the Miami Yacht Show up on Collins Avenue in Miami Beach, there are 500 more. (And that’s not…

Miami Boat Shows, All of Them, Are Bigger and Better than Ever This Year. Plus: Reviews of 37 New Cruising Boats

You’ll find lot of changes at the Miami boat shows (all of them) next month. The big yacht show along Collins Avenue has rebranded itself so it’s now officially called the Miami Yacht Show, although it’s in exactly the same place but with some nicer amenities. It also has a sub-show for superyachts, available by invitation only, down on Watson Island. Meanwhile, the big Miami International Boat Show down on Virginia Key, which used to be only for powerboats, now has incorporated what used to the Strictly Sail show in downtown Miami, so that it’s totally interdenominational, with power and…

A Look Back at Miami: Let’s Hear It for the NMMA and Virginia Key I haven’t seen such an upbeat boat show in many years – probably before 2008, in fact. At the Miami International Boat Show last week on Virginia Key the docks were crowded, people were having fun, taking demo rides, buying boats. It wasn’t as if they didn’t have enough to choose from. Indeed, the show had 1,300 new boats for sale, including 550 in the water: big boats, small boats, outboard boats, inboard boats. If it floats it was there. And people were happy. Several told…

Report from Miami: A Great Opening Day Jeff Druek, the president of Outer Reef Yachts, didn’t make it to the opening day of the Miami boat show this year, although a lot of other people did. The problem was that Druek was just returning from going around Cape Horn on one of his boats, Argo, an 88-footer; he did make it for the second day, however. The mood on the opening day of the three Miami Shows was decidedly upbeat and optimistic. Down on Virginia Key, home of the Miami International Boat Show, George Armendariz, CEO of Beneteau of the…

New Sabre 45 Salon Express: Made in Maine, Delivered in March

One of the reasons that Sabre Yachts has built, and maintained, a leadership position in the power cruising market is that the Maine-based company keeps introducing new models, in good times and bad. Now it has just delivered hull number one of the 45 Salon Express to its new owner in Florida. The 45, fitting between the company’s existing 42- and 48-foot models, is an all-new design with two staterooms, two full heads, and the built-in-Maine lines and craftsmanship that help define all Sabres. The master stateroom is forward, with an island bed and several lockers and drawers for storage…

Countdown to Miami I can’t say, or more accurately, I don’t want to say, how many Miami boat shows I’ve been to over the years. Let’s just say, a lot. I do remember vividly the first one; it opened my eyes, and blew my mind. I know it started with dinner with the president of Hatteras and moved on to boat tests in Government Cut and raft-ups in Stiltsville. I previously had been a writer and editor at Time and Newsweek, sitting in corporate offices in New York. Now I was the editor of a boating magazine, taking off on boats,…

Big Changes for Both Miami Shows: More Boats More Accessible. Plus Reviews of 36 New Boats Here

The Miami boat shows, yes, both of them, won’t be the same this year. The big yacht show along Collins Avenue in Miami Beach, which has been free for years, now will charge $20 admission, and it will have both new boat and brokerage boat sections. Meanwhile, the Progressive Insurance Miami International Boat Show, down on Virginia Key, will have more boats than before (including many more in the water), and it will be much more accessible via more free shuttle buses and larger water taxis. Both shows run over Presidents’ Day weekend, from Feb. 16-20. The renamed Yachts Miami…

Big Changes in Miami

BIG CHANGES IN MIAMI by Peter Janssen The Miami boat shows, yes, both of them, won’t be the same this year. The big yacht show along Collins Avenue in Miami Beach, which has been free for years, now will charge $20 admission. And the National Marine Manufacturers Association/Progressive Insurance boat show leaders say they have learned from last year, when they moved from the Miami Beach Convention Center down to the marine stadium on Virginia Key, and promise to have many more free shuttle buses and larger water taxis to make it easier to get down there. Both shows run…
