Grandfather Drowns Trying To Save 3-Year-Old

A grandfather drowned when he tried to save his 3-year-old grandson who fell off their boat after it was hit by the wake of a passing boat in Saginaw Bay, Michigan. The tragic accident occurred last Saturday afternoon during a family fishing outing on the bay, which is part of Lake Huron. The grandfather, James G. David, was fishing with his son, 32, and his two grandchildren, 3 and 9, on a 17-foot boat. Archipelago Starts High Latitude Charter

Archipelago Yachts, the new British builder, won’t launch its first 47 Power Cat until the Southampton Boat Show in September, but it just announced that it’s starting a new charter business for the northern latitudes next spring. Archipelago Charters will launch its maiden offshore voyage, called “Cruise North – 47 to 64” in April, when it’s still cold in northern Europe. The plan is to start in Southampton and then cruise to Germany, Denmark, Norway, Shetland, the Faroe Islands and Iceland, returning via the Western Isles and Ireland. Beneteau To Use 180-hp Electric Outboard

The move toward electric-powered outboard boats got a major boost today. Indeed, Group Beneteau and Vision Marine Technologies just announced that they’ve formed a partnership to put VMT’s electric-powered outboards on several of Beneteau’s brands, starting with Four Winns. VMT makes the E-Motion 180, which it says is the world’s most powerful electric outboard. Azimut is building a new Magellano 66 cruiser with an updated version of the line’s Dual Mode hull that’s designed to be more fuel-efficient than ever while also reducing carbon emissions. The 66 is the latest in Azimut’s long-range cruising Magellano fleet, that now includes a 43, a 25 Metri (82’) and the flagship 30 Metri (97’ 6”).
