See the Winners of the First Gala Nordhavn Film Festival

Denzil Baynes of the Nordhavn 120 Aurora was the big – meaning $10,000 big – winner of the first Nordhavn Film Festival at the company’s headquarters in Dana Point, California, on Saturday night. (Baynes is the one holding the check in the picture above.) Some 200 people attended the black-tie, red-carpet, Hollywood-style event, which basically celebrated the Nordhavn culture of adventure and creativity. The top ten finalist videos were shown at the dinner. They were chosen by a panel of judges, which included film and television industry veterans, from 18 submissions. Everyone seemed impressed by the quality of the amateur…

Nordhavn Film Festival Goes Live on Saturday Night

It’s no secret that Nordhavn owners love their boats, or that they love to go cruising, often to the far corners of the globe. But many of them also love to record their adventures, making videos for themselves and their friends to enjoy for many years to come. To take advantage of this trend, Nordhavn has organized its first-ever Nordhavn Film Festival, a Hollywood-styled gala at the company’s headquarters at Dana Point, California, on Saturday, Oct. 12. The festivities get underway at 7 pm Pacific time; 10 pm Eastern. If you can’t make it to the festival itself, you can…

California Couple Tackle Great Loop on New Nordhavn Coastal Pilot

In a recent email, I asked Larry McCullough, an experienced boat owner who’s now about half way through the Great Loop with his wife Jamie, why they had bought hull number one of the Nordhavn 59 Coastal Pilot. “Yesterday was a good example of why Nordhavn,” he replied. “We are in Lake Michigan, which can be very treacherous. NOAA was calling for three-foot seas but the wind picked up more and we were in some seven-footers that were very close together. I must say the boat handled it better than some of the crew.” McCullough, a retired stockbroker from Tiburon,…

Nordhavn To Show New 63 Aft Pilothouse Cruiser in Newport

Nordhavn will be showing its new 63 aft pilothouse cruiser at the Newport International Boat Show, starting Sept. 12. With a hullform based on the popular (and well-proven) Nordhavn 55, the 63 will take you anywhere in the world. It’s powered by a single 325-hp John Deere diesel, and it carries 2,500 gallons of fuel, so it definitely is capable of repeating the route of the historic Nordhavn Atlantic Rally 15 years ago, from Fort Lauderdale to Gibraltar (with stops in Bermuda and the Azores). If you want to stay closer to home, the Nordhavn 63 will carry you in…

Cruising the Remote Broughton Islands on a Nordhavn 55

Kevin and Allison Jeffries just spent a month cruising through the majestic wilderness of the Broughtons, an archipelago of more than 200 uninhabited islands off the coast of British Columbia, on their Nordhavn 55 Red Rover with their two shelter dogs, Zoe and Max. They found a cruising paradise there, with a way of life that could be hard to preserve in the future. The Broughtons are flanked by an often snow-capped coastal mountain range on the mainland side and the upper reaches of Vancouver Island to the west. Most of the area is a Provincial park with protected Indian lands and…

The Clarkes: Living the Dream, Finally, on Their Nordhavn 40 Enfin

For Capt. Eric Clarke and his wife, Di-Enid, the name of their 2001 Nordhavn 40 says it all. The name is Enfin, and that means “finally” in French. He was born in France, and she is fluent in French. And Enfin, he told me, captures their dream. “’Finally’ would be the start of our dream, the means to do it and the great escape. We’d ‘finally’ be retired and enjoying life together. We’d ‘finally’ do what we want.” Right now the Clarkes and Princess, their Siberian husky, are cruising in British Columbia, north of the San Juans. They bought the…

Nordhavn Building New 41 in Turkey. Around the World, Anyone?

Here’s big news for Nordhavn fans. The company is building a new Nordhavn 41 in Turkey, and it’s going to be ready to cruise around the world. Indeed, Nordhavn says the new 41 will be “the most capable, efficient, safe and sea-kindly passagemaker ever built.” The 41 certainly comes with a rich heritage. Nordhavn put power cruising on the map when its 40 went 24,000 nm around the world in 2001-2002. Since then Nordhavns, with models now ranging from 47 to 120 feet, have gone more than seven million nm in ocean crossings. In keeping with that tradition, the new…

Dirona, a Nordhavn 52, Is One of the First American Boats To Cruise the Saimaa Canal in Russia and Finland

Very few Americans make it to the Saimaa Canal, a 26-mile body of water starting near Vyborg, Russia, and ending in Finland’s lake country, with a series of 120 interconnected lakes and canals. Indeed, one local told James and Jennifer Hamilton on Dirona, their Nordhavn 52, that it was the first American boat there in the past 48 years. The Hamiltons, from Seattle, have been cruising since 2012 and already have one circumnavigation on Dirona under their belts. They plan to cruise in the Scandinavian countries this summer. Here is their log of cruising the Saimaa Canal: The Saimaa Canal, connecting Lake…

Nordhavn Owners Get Together in Anacortes, Washington, At Start of Cruising Season

Nordhavn owners like to get together with other Nordhavn owners. A shared spirit of adventure and pride of ownership go a long way. And, as it happens, this is the time of year when a lot of Nordhavn owners are starting their cruising season in the Pacific Northwest, cruising in the San Juans and the Gulf Islands or heading up the Inside Passage to Alaska. So it’s not surprising that the second annual Nordhavns Around Puget Sound (NAPS) rendezvous last week at Cap Sante Marina in Anacortes, Washington, was a big success, drawing 19 boats plus seven sets of owners…

Nordhavn Building New 80 with More Contemporary Styling and 12-Knot Performance

Nordhavn is building its first 80, another battleship-solid, blue-water cruiser but with a new, more contemporary look and styling. Powered by twin 375-hp John Deere diesels, the new Nordhavn 80 will top out at 12 knots and cruise at 9 knots, and it will carry 4,810 gallons of fuel for an ocean-crossing range. Nordhavn says it developed the 80 in response to buyers’ demand for a new boat between the Nordhavn 76 and the Nordhavn 86. “For some, an 86 is just too big,” says Jim Leishman, the vice president of PAE, Nordhavn’s parent company. “At 80 feet, this boat…
