Outer Reef just launched the first of its new 830 Classic Motoryacht series and is now shipping it from the factory in Taiwan to a young American couple who previously owned an Outer Reef 700 Classic. Wanting more room for entertaining, the new owners moved up in size, but were loyal to Outer Reef for its combination of craftsmanship, luxury and long-range cruising performance. Outer Reef has been building on its cruising pedigree lately. Two Outer Reef yachts have gone around Cape Horn, one with the company president, Jeff Druek, on board. Outer Reef Updates Its Popular 650 Classic

Outer Reef is re-engineering its 650 Classic Motoryacht, a size range that’s popular with cruising owner-operators. The updates include many trends that American owners have desired on their yachts in recent years. Outer Reef has been making the 650 for more than a decade, and Jeff Druek, the builder’s president and CEO, said they considered feedback from existing and potential owners before re-engineering the 650. Many of the changes have already been incorporated in the Outer Reef 700 Classic, one of the company’s most popular models. But some owners prefer a slightly smaller yacht than the 700 for a variety…

Second Outer Reef Yacht Rounds Cape Horn

Outer Reef  just announced that another one of its yachts has rounded Cape Horn, successfully transiting some of the most treacherous waters in the world. This latest voyage involved a 2014 Outer Reef 700 Classic Motoryacht called Dogo’s Hideout. It passed the rocky headland on Hornos Island in the Tierra del Fuego archipelago last year, rounding the horn, on a 35-day passage from Puerto Montt, Chile, to Ushuaia, Argentina, the southernmost city in that area that’s known as “the end of the world.” In 2017, another Outer Reef, a 2015 880 Classic Motoryacht named Argo, rounded the horn. On that…

Outer Reef Owner Rescues 5: His Story

Nick and Robin, experienced cruisers, took delivery of their new Outer Reef 610 motoryacht Silver Skye last year. Earlier this summer, when Nick was cruising from Brielle, New Jersey, to Quincy, Massachusetts, with his friend Kurt, he ended up on a rescue mission. Here’s his first-hand account: “Last Friday, as we were traveling from Hadley Harbor (a New England anchorage and cruising ground south of Cape Cod) in the Elizabeth Islands to Quincy, Massachusetts, I spotted what I initially thought was an individual on a jet ski. “As I looked closer, I saw that he was waving frantically. I changed…

No Boat Shows? The Boats Will Come To You

No boat shows? No problem. Many of the traditional fall boat shows have been closed, or changed to virtual, on-line versions of their past lives, fallen victim to the coronavirus pandemic. But boat companies are nothing if mobile, and if you can’t go to shows to see their new boats, they’ll bring their new boats to you. Or at least to a controlled space that’s relatively close to you. Here’s a look at what some of them are doing: Hinckley Yachts is hosting showcases in Portsmouth, Rhode Island, Stamford, Connecticut, and Annapolis. These will be semi-private, limited-access events, using Hinckley…

Take Your Pick of 5 Great Cruising Boats

From 27 feet to 88 feet, here’s a good look at five popular cruising boats from major builders – the Ranger Tug 27, Beneteau 34 Swift Trawler (pictured here), Kadey-Krogen 48, Nordhavn 52, and Outer Reef 88. I’ve spent a good amount of time cruising on all of these boats (except the Outer Reef) and I can attest that they all offer comfortable and safe cruising over the waters for which they were designed. (The Nordhavn, for example, is a blue-water cruiser built to cross oceans, while the Ranger is a coastal cruiser appropriate for the ICW or the Inside…
