New Aquila 46 Yacht Luxury Power Cat Introduced

At the Ft. Lauderdale International Boat Show last month, I had the chance to visit with the Aquila team and have a look at the brand new 46 Yacht that was being introduced to the North American market. The cruising cat had made its debut at the Cannes, France, boat show in September to great acclaim. The new 46 is replacing the 44 in the Yacht line which is no small ask since the 44 has seen 200 cats delivered. But from a first look, the new boat will be up to the task. The whole Aquila concept is to…

The Nordhavn 71, which was introduced in 2023, was designed for adventurous couples who want the look and feel of the builder’s larger yachts yet wants to cruise without a professional crew. As an owner-operator cruising boat, the layouts and systems have been created for ease of movement about the boat, ease of mooring and anchoring and ease of maintenance. At the Ft. Lauderdale International Boats at the end of October, I met with  Jim and Eric Leishman. Jim is Nordhavn’s Director of Design and Eric handles sales and customer relations.  We got talking about the Nordhavn 71 of which…

Nordhavn Introduces New N46 MKII Couple’s Cruising Home

This is a feel-good story for me due to my long association with Pacific Asian Enterprises, the builder of Nordhavn motor yachts. PAE started life in the late 1970s building the Mason line of classic cruising sailboats at the Ta Shing Boat Yard in Taiwan. Their first boat was the Mason 43 and, as it happens, I and my family bought hull number 3 and spent five years sailing Clover around the world. In 1986, PAE launched their first long-range cruising motor yacht, the N 46 that quickly set the stage for a new era of ocean voyaging for cruisers…

Maine Built Boats: Lyman Morse and CW Hood Collaborate on Sweet Hood 35 LM

For a family day boat with a large cockpit that is also a fine couple’s cruiser that will be home for a long weekend or a week away, 35 feet is a manageable size that hits a sweet spot in the compromise between cost, comfort and performance. While there is a bushel of boats in this size range and type, there are not many that are custom built by Maine craftsmen in a yard famous for building extremely high quality boats one customer and one boat at a time. Lyman Morse, which is based in what is known as Maine’s…

Man Falls Off Nantucket Ferry in Howling Nor’easter, Lucky to be Rescued

Here’s a story from two weeks ago that not only involves heroic action from the passengers on a Martha’s Vineyard ferry but also an as yet unsolved mystery. At 3:30 pm on Monday October 13, passengers on the Massachusetts Steamship Authority ferry Island Home, bound from Martha’s Vineyard to Wood’s Hole, Massachusetts, saw a man in the water a fair distance off the coast near Nobska Point. The weather was terrible with howling northeast winds, heavy rain and building seas. In this weather, passengers and crew leapt into action and threw life rings and life preservers in the man’s direction,…

Krogen 60 Open Hull Number Two Redefines World Cruising

The Krogen 60 Open from Kadey Krogen Yachts is a massive 60 footer that combines  true ocean crossing capabilities with the live-aboard comforts couples and families need for long range adventuring. The Open concept was first employed in the 50 Open a few years ago. The ”open” in the name refers to the lack of a fixed, full-height bulkhead at the aft end of the pilot house so the salon, galley and pilot house flow together and a create one huge social living area. There is still a dinette aft and the dinette and bench settee in the pilot house,…

Coast Guard Offers Second Comment Period Regarding the Removal of 100 Navigation Buoys in Northeast District

The Coast Guard’s Northeast District announced this week that they were revisiting the planned removal of some 100 buoys and channel makers between New York Harbor and the Canadian border. The move follows the initial announcement last May, which called for a public comment period. More that 3,000 comments were submitted from private and commercial mariners. The new comment period reflects the modification of the buoy removal plan and seeks to further tailor the plan to the public’s needs in concert with the Coast Guard’s mission to modernize their buoy system. There are 5,460 buoys under the Northeast District’s Water…
