Brooklyn Marina Closes: Fuhgeddaboudit

The well-established Marine Basin Marina on Brooklyn’s Gravesend Bay will close on April 1, forcing some 200 boat owners to find a new spot for their vessels. The marina, on Brooklyn’s western shore opposite Staten Island, offered deep-water access to fishing and cruising on the Lower Bay and the Atlantic Ocean. The Brooklyn Paper reports that the Gagliano family owned the marina for half a century and is selling it, and adjacent properties, to a real estate investment firm for $57.5 million. The marina’s website said it offered “endless opportunities for shopping, eating, drinking. You can also just roam around…

Tiara’s new 36-knot, bright and open 49 Coupe will be on display at the Palm Beach show, starting March 26. The 49 Coupe features a salon filled with light from windows all around (and the large sunroof, when it’s open), and two staterooms with two heads below. Power comes from twin 600-hp Volvo IPS800 pod drives; they deliver a top speed of 36.1 knots and an optimal cruising speed of 26.2 knots with a range of 219 nm. Volvo is a long-time partner with Tiara (I tested the very first IPS on a Tiara in the Great Lakes more than…

New Deal Island 50: A Modern Classic from Australia

You probably won’t be seeing the new Deal Island 50 in person, unless you’re heading for Melbourne, Australia, but you might want to take a look at it anyway, since it strikes me as one of the best-looking boats to come along in quite a while. And it does take advantage of two international boating trends: the emergence of more and more classic Down East type boats, and the growing popularity of day boats or weekend cruisers. The boat pictured above is the first of a line of 50-feet fast ocean cruisers built by the Wooden Boat Shop south of…

New Bitter End Inflatable SUP; Fits in a Backpack

Before it was devastated by Hurricanes Irma and Maria in September, 2017, the Bitter End Yacht Club was one of the most sought-after, and highly recognized, destinations in the British Virgin Islands. The Bitter End has been rebuilding its 64 acres since then, but in the interim it has launched Bitter End Provisions, “to help you prepare for your next nautical adventure.” The company says the criteria for something to qualify as a Bitter End Provision are that “It works hard and works often. That it has been tested at sea. And that it pairs really well with a bottle…

A handful of significant cruising powerboats will make their debuts there this year, while hundreds more will be on display. Now in its  35th year, the Palm Beach show has become increasingly popular because of its location and its manageable size. The show’s on Flagler Drive on West Palm Beach, where downtown meets the Intracoastal Waterway. It’s easy to get to, with lots of nearby parking, and it doesn’t have all…

Barton & Gray: Enjoy a Hinckley, Without Owning One

Here’s an appealing alternative to boat ownership, particularly if you like to enjoy the better things in life and you like to go boating in a lot of different places: The Barton & Gray Mariners Club, which offers members the use of crewed Hinckley Yachts in 25 spots on the East Coast, the Gulf Coast, and the Great Lakes. The major appeal of the club is that you can have all the advantages of owning a Hinckley without the disadvantages, primarily the costs of buying one, insurance, dockage and maintenance. New Johnson 80: An “Entry-Level Superyacht”

Johnson Yachts has just launched a four-stateroom, 27-knot, 80-foot cruising boat that it says is an entry-level superyacht. That’s because no two Johnson 80s will be the same. Each owner can enjoy a high level of customization in the interior, just as he or she would be able to choose on a much larger vessel. The new Johnson 80 is designed by Bill Dixon, of Dixon Yacht Design in Southampton, England, one of the world’s leading yacht designers. The interior is by Karen Lynn Interior Design of Fort Lauderdale. “The Johnson 80 combines our proven engineering with fashionable comforts of…
