NTSB Faults Owner, Captain, in Dive Boat Tragedy

The National Transportation Safety Board sharply criticized the owners and captain of the 75-foot dive boat Conception that burned and sank off Southern California last year, killing 34 people, for not posting a night watch and for failing to train the crew in how to handle emergencies. Woman Thrown Into Air by Explosion at Fuel Dock

Here are some astonishing pictures of a woman being thrown into the air and then into the water in an explosion at a fuel dock in Porto di Ponza, Italy. Incredibly, she was not injured; neither were her husband and his daughter, who jumped off the burning boat into the water, or the fuel dock attendant who was blown off the dock. Fire Destroys Sunseeker 66 on Harbour Island, Bahamas

A fire at a dock at Valentines Resort and Marina in Harbour Island, Bahamas, completely destroyed a 66-foot Sunseeker. The five people on board all escaped without injuries. Harbour Island police say they received a call at 12:35 on Saturday afternoon saying that a boat was on fire at the marina. When they responded, the boat was fully engulfed in flames. Two people suffered serious burns when a Carver powerboat caught fire while refueling at a marina in Salisbury, Massachusetts. They were taken to a nearby hospital for treatment. A 40-foot fishing boat caught fire and sank about 2.5 miles southeast of Point Judith, Rhode Island, last week. The Coast Guard rescued all three people on board; they were not injured. The Coast Guard station in Point Judith heard a VHF Mayday call on Channel 16 at 11:01 a.m. saying that the boat was on fire. A 60-foot sportfishing boat caught fire Sunday afternoon just off Shooters Restaurant in Fort Lauderdale, temporarily closing down the Intracoastal Waterway. Just a day before, two superyachts caught fire on the New River; about 100 firefighters were involved in extinguishing those fires. A 1999 Sea Ray exploded after refueling at a gas dock on the Lake of the Ozarks last Saturday. One person was killed, three were injured, and only quick thinking by other people on the fuel dock and on PWCs in the water kept the tragedy from getting worse. The explosion occurred at 3:58 p.m. at the Bridgeview Marina, when Brent Soloman, 52, the boat’s driver, turned on the engines after refueling.
