A New 475 Blue-Water Pilothouse Cruiser Coming from Nordhavn

Nordhavn is designing a new 475 trawler to replace the popular 43 in the company’s lineup. And the new two-stateroom, two-head pilothouse cruiser, powered by a single 180-hp John Deere diesel, will be true to Nordhavn’s blue-water, world-circling roots, says Jim Leishman, the vice president of PAE, Nordhavn’s parent company. “Nordhavns have crossed more oceans than all our competitors combined,” he told me at the Newport show recently. The 475 will be built to increase that number. On the 475, the keel will be extended aft from the keel on the 43, the salon will be larger and the boat…

James Ellingford Posts His Best Pictures So Far of Voyage from Australia to Alaska and LA.

Here’s the latest from James Ellingford, the retired Australian businessman and dedicated cruiser, who’s now in Los Angeles on Pendana, his Nordhavn 62. It’s a collection of pictures he has taken since he and his wife Claire and their two daughters left Sydney in April, 2015, to start a six-year circumnavigation. As you can see, Ellingford is an accomplished photographer. The pictures trace the Ellingfords’ voyage so far as they crossed the Pacific to Alaska and then worked their way down the West Coast. The last leg of their trip took them from San Francisco to LA, and started with…

Report from Newport: “Best Show Ever,” “Outstanding” and “Fantastic” By Peter A. Janssen The first show of the fall season, the Newport International Boat Show can serve as a bellwether for the coming year. And this year all the signs were good.  Many new boats were introduced at the show – the Grand Banks 60, Sabre 45 Salon Express, Hinckley Dasher all-electric boat, MJM 35Z, Nordhavn 59 Coastal Pilot, Outer Reef 610, Beneteau Swift Trawler 35, and Hampton Endurance 658, among them. Nancy Piffard, the show director, said attendance was up 10 percent over the previous year. The show “was…

Vesper, a Nordhavn 68, Cruises to Greenland and Iceland with a Husband and Wife Crew By Peter A. Janssen Here’s a view you don’t see very often – the entrance to Prince Christian Sound in Greenland from the helm of a Nordhavn 68. This particular Nordhavn 68, Vesper, was well traveled even before it cruised into Greenland and Iceland. Indeed, Bob and Kathy Valleau, the owners, originally climbed on the boat when it was commissioned at Nordhavn’s headquarters in Dana Point, California, in November, 2015. Then, with a Nordhavn delivery captain, they cruised down to Mexico, the Panama Canal, the…

Nordhavn 59 Coastal Pilot Heads for East Coast Shows

Hull number one of the 20-knot Nordhavn 59 Coastal Pilot is on its way to the east coast, where it will be displayed at the fall boat shows, starting with Newport, Rhode Island, in early September. This three-stateroom, two-head Nordhavn, which tops out at twice the speed of previous Nordhavns, is the first to be built for coastal cruising, as opposed to the open-ocean, blue-water boats that have made the company famous. “This is a boat for people who don’t need ocean-crossing capabilities,” says Jim Leishman, vice president of PAE, Nordhavn’s parent company. Designed for owners moving down from larger…

After Three Gales and 20-foot Seas, the Hamiltons Arrive in Ireland on Their Nordhavn 52. See Video

James and Jennifer Hamilton have been cruising ever since they decided, over a glass of wine in Seattle, to take “a quick blast around the world” on Dirona, their Nordhavn 52. That was in 2012. Since then, they’ve crossed the Pacific, spending months in New Zealand and more months in Australia, then crossing the Indian Ocean to the Cape of Good Hope, and then heading up the Atlantic to Barbados and eventually the east coast of the U.S. and as far north as Newfoundland. Here’s a great video of some of their latest trips, including the one they just finished,…

After 35,000 Miles, The Ullmanns Are Just Getting Started So far, Jennifer and Mark Ullmann have put about 35,000 nautical miles on Starlet, their 17-year-old Nordhavn 46, and they’re just warming up. Right now, they’re in the Marquesas in French Polynesia, deep in the South Pacific (pictured above), and that’s about half way ‘round in their planned circumnavigation. Until about ten years ago, the Ullmanns were living traditional lives on land, although they both loved diving and had a 24-foot dive boat in the Florida Keys. Then, after a bad day at work, they were having dinner in a Thai…

At Sea Once More, the Hamiltons Are Halfway to Ireland on their Nordhavn 52 James and Jennifer Hamilton are at it again (or more accurately, are at it still). The Hamiltons, a high-tech couple from Seattle, have already cruised around the world on MV Dirona, their 52-foot Nordhavn. Last year they cruised 3,650 nm from St. Helena in the South Atlantic to Barbados, the longest nonstop voyage ever taken by a Nordhavn under 100 feet. Now, they’re in the middle of a 3,000-nm cruise from Newport, Rhode Island, to Ireland. After that, they plan to head for the Scottish Isles…

Another Nordhavn Fleet Plans an Atlantic Crossing Nordhavn is at it again. Another group of Nordhavn owners, six this time, are going to be leaving Florida soon, with four of them ultimately heading across the Atlantic for Gibraltar. (Two will go as far as Bermuda, watch the America’s Cup there and then cruise up to Nova Scotia.) The other four will continue to Horta in the Azores and then on to Gibraltar. The original Nordhavn Atlantic Rally, in 2004 (pictured in Gibraltar, above), was the first fleet of recreational powerboats ever to cross the Atlantic, with 18 boats (including 15…

Nordhavn 62 Owner James Ellingford Completes First Leg of Circumnavigation with His Family, Writes New Book, and Details the Real Costs of Cruising

James Ellingford, a retired Australian business executive and avid cruiser, doesn’t like to live a humdrum life. Indeed, six years ago, when he decided that he and his wife would take on a circumnavigation, he wrote, “Normality in every sense for us is, in a word, boring.” Ellingford certainly is a man who lives by his word. He has already cruised from Sydney to Seattle on his Nordhavn 62 with his wife and two daughters on the start of that circumnavigation; he’s just published his second cruising book, “Cruising Conversations, A Million Nautical Miles and Counting,” and on his blog…
