New Fountaine Pajot MY 40: Year of the Cats

Judging by all the activity and new launches so far, this is shaping up to be the year of the cats. New catamarans, it seems, have leaped into the power cruising mainstream. Several were introduced at the recent Fort Lauderdale show, while others are already in the private or charter markets, and even more are on the drawing boards. The new Fountaine Pajot MY 40 (pictured above) was a big hit in Lauderdale, and so was the Bali 4.3, which is 42’ 3” LOA and has a massive 23’ 3’ beam. Silent-Yachts had its newly repowered 55 solar cat on…

Insider Tips: Cruising Mallorca to Ibiza on Chartered Power Cats

Cruising Mallorca to Ibiza – Insider Tips Published: October 7, 2019    The Moorings   Comments By Renato Seitenfus: Since I joined The Moorings and became hooked on the charter experience, I cannot let one year pass without stepping on a boat, exploring new waters, and discovering new cultures. Every year my friends and I set up an annual floating meeting, so after the Caribbean and Thailand, we decided to choose a destination that we’d all been to before and fell in love with – Spain. Our crew was bigger this time with 12 best friends coming from different places all…

New Corona 70 Power Cat: Light and Space Everywhere

The new Corona 70, a semi-planing power cat, is simply filled with light and space. There are windows and glass doors everywhere, and if you’re looking for more space than is usual on a 70-foot yacht, consider the bull-beam lower deck, where the starboard hull folds out to provide a private balcony off the master stateroom. And the transom does double duty, opening up to house a “beach club” there with chaise lounges, sofas, low tables and large screen TVs. If you want to make a statement, the Corona 70 would be at the top of your list. That is,…

Larry Graf Starts Aspen’s Newest Adventure: 1,120 Miles Down the Mackenzie River to the Arctic Ocean

Larry Graf is at it again. The founder, chief designer and self-described “lead adventurer” of Aspen Power Catamarans is just starting his Aspen Arctic Adventure, cruising some 1,120 miles down the Mackenzie River in Canada’s remote Northwest Territories to the Arctic Ocean. First, he has to trailer his ride, a 34-foot Aspen L107, 1,171 miles from the Aspen factory in Burlington, Washington, to Hay River and the Mackenzie. The Mackenzie River is the longest river in Canada, and the second largest in North America, after the Mississippi. It flows through a region with few people but lots of forests and…

New Amasea 84 Aluminum Expedition Cat with Three Decks and 2,000 nm Range

Amasea Yachts is now building its new 84, an all-aluminum power catamaran designed for long-range cruising and exploration in the high latitudes, in its yard in Turkey. The Amasea 84 will have three decks, instead of the usual two, and will have a range of 2,000 nm. Jack Wijnants, a Belgian-born yachtsman and builder (he started another company in Malta ten years ago to build patrol and rescue boats), founded Amasea Yachts last year in Monaco because he said he couldn’t find another production catamaran to suit his needs. He wanted to cruise around the world with his wife, he…

New Zurn 60 Powercat, Filled with Light, Space and Innovation

With his new Zurn 60 Powercat, Doug Zurn has definitely stepped out of the box – again. There’s a lot going on in this boat, originally designed for an experienced ocean-cruising owner, from its innovative layout to its 23-knot top speed, but the main themes are privacy, space and light. Ever since he drew the first Shelter Island Runabout two decades ago, Zurn has designed low-profile, long-sheerline, Downeast-style boats with generous tumblehome, head-turning looks and head-snapping performance. Bob Johnstone saw that boat and had Zurn design the first MJM, a 34z (the “z,” of course, is for Zurn), in 2003.…

New Horizon 65 Power Cat: A Blend of Luxury, Space and Performance

I thought I’d take a quick tour of the new Horizon 65 Power Catamaran during the Fort Lauderdale International Boat Show, where it was just launched. Then I realized there’s no such thing as a quick tour of this boat. It’s huge. It’s luxurious. It has beautiful woodwork – as in the curved railing on the stairs from the salon to the skylounge; it’s like a work of art. You don’t just glance at it and look away. You want to get up close and personal. I forgot about the quick tour and settled in to enjoy this new cat,…

Aspen Tests New 32-foot Outboard Prototype: Top Speed of 27.5 mph, Burning 21.1 gph

Here’s a first look at Aspen Power Catamaran’s prototype of their first outboard-powered cruising boat, a 32-footer with a 200-hp Yamaha on the starboard side and a 25-hp Yamaha on the port side. The outboard boat is built with the same asymmetrical proa hull as all other Aspens, where the port hull is significantly thinner and lighter than the starboard hull. In all of Aspen’s diesel-powered boats to date, all the machinery – the engine, gears, shaft and prop – is on the starboard side. In its first test, in calm conditions with two people on board and 85 gallons…
