Prestige Planning New Luxury Power Cat

Here’s some big news on the power catamaran front. Prestige, the French builder of luxury motoryachts and part of the powerful Groupe Beneteau, will start making luxury power cats. Erwin Bamps, the Prestige general manager, made the announcement at a Groupe Beneteau press conference at the Cannes Yachting Festival. He did not reveal any details, and said he would have much more about the new cat at the Düsseldorf boat show in January. But Bamps did say the cat was an expansion of the company’s “private island concept” and it would be aimed at both the charter and owner-operator markets…

Sunreef Launches All-New 70 Power Cat

Sunreef Yachts just launched their new 70 Sunreef Power, which fills the obvious hole between the Sunreef 60 and the Sunreef 80. Like its siblings, the 70, all-new for the 2022 model year, is a luxury catamaran that can be highly customized for each owner. The 70 Sunreef Power, built in Gdansk, Poland, can hold up to 12 people in five staterooms and crew quarters; the galley can be ordered up or down, depending on the owner’s desires. The new cat, with an LOA of 69’ 9,” has enormous social areas, inside and out. The foredeck alone spans the yacht’s…

Sunreef is finishing its first 100 Power Catamaran in its factory in Gdansk, Poland, developed on the success of the widely acclaimed Sunreef 80 power cat. The 100 meant to be luxurious and vast, inside and out, and it makes use of its more than 44-foot beam to accommodate ten guests in five staterooms (plus a crew of three) in a total of 5,380 square feet of living space. The main deck on the new 100 just seems to go on forever. The middle 40 percent or so is occupied by the salon, filled with light from panoramic windows. It…

New Aquila 54 Power Cat: An Instant Hit

It would be a considerable understatement to say that the new Aquila 54 Yacht Power Catamaran is a hit right out of the box. Indeed, the big new Aquila has already been nominated as a finalist for the Multihull of the Year Award, and it hasn’t even officially been launched yet. But it’s easy to see why the judges choose the Aquila. Lex Raas, the president of Aquila product development, says that the 54 “breaks new boundaries, bow to stern, on a boat of this size.” He said it has “integrated hull bulbs, optional fully enclosed flybridge, Portuguese bridge, choice…

Our 200th Issue! Plus, Trends 2020

Welcome to the 200th edition of Cruising Odyssey, the weekly digital newsletter that celebrates the idea of living the dream under power. Two hundred weeks. Who’d have thought? Well, when we (George Day, our publisher; Scott Akerman, our ad director, and me as editor) started this enterprise, we never really had a longevity discussion. We hoped Cruising Odyssey, the newsletter and the associated website, would catch on, but we never really considered a timeline for that. As things turned out, we hit a nerve –  the right idea at the right time. The growing power cruising audience was more than…

New 60-foot Luxury Cat Carries a Mini Sub

Officina Armare, the upscale Italian design firm, has just unveiled its latest head-turning custom yacht: a 60-foot luxury catamaran called Project Aquanaut that carries its own two-person submarine. The design studio says it was “heavily influenced” by the looks of a Ford Bronco, and calls the new 45-knot cat an  SUV of the sea. The cat does have a low, sporty, boxy, and very aggressive profile, and it’s clearly meant for versatility and adventure. It will be built to order by Licia Yachts in Turkey. Powered by twin 800-hp Volvo IPS1050 pod drives, the Aquanaut tops out at 45 knots…

Sunreef Launching New 70-foot Luxury Power Cat

Sunreef Yachts, the luxury builder in Gdansk, Poland, is filling out its power catamaran fleet with the introduction of a new 70 footer. Its lineup already has 60-, 80- and 100-foot models, so the new 70 fills a gap. Like the previous models, the 70 is elegant, comfortable and seaworthy. The new cat also takes full advantage of its more than 37-foot beam to create enormous spaces for entertaining and living on board. The foredeck, for example, runs full beam and includes a “terrace,” a protected lounging area with sofas, and then an open area all the way forward for…
