Yanmar Building New Hydrogen Engine

Yanmar just announced that it’s making a 4-stroke, high-speed marine engine that uses hydrogen fuel. The goal is to develop hydrogen  power for zero-emission vessels. Yanmar is working with the commercial coastal cruising industry in Japan on the hydrogen power project now, but the implications for recreational cruising boats in the future are vast. While it is developing the new hydrogen engine, Yanmar is also working on a hybrid-electric-propulsion vessel that would combine hydrogen-engine generators with batteries. The preliminary innovative design incorporates a container type of a hydrogen power generation system on the upper deck. As part of its transition…

Lyman-Morse Completing Hood 35 Hardtop Express

Hull number one of the instant-classic Hood 35 Lyman-Morse Hardtop Express is nearing completion in Thomaston, Maine, and will be launched this summer. And Lyman-Morse is already working on hull number two, a flybridge version, that will be ready next year. (The boat is also offered in a soft top version as a day boat.) In any configuration, the new 35 has the elegant, Down East lines that never go out of style. And it has superior performance from twin 440-hp Yanmar diesels with Hamilton water jets. The water jets, of course, offer a safety factor and low draft of…

Yanmar Tests Its First Hydrogen-Powered Boat

Yanmar just completed the first sea trial of its new hydrogen-powered boat, developed with Toyota, off the coast of Oita in Southern Japan. Yanmar says the 40-foot boat is the first to comply with Japan’s safety guidelines for hydrogen fuel-cell vessels. The boat used a marine hydrogen fuel-cell system that incorporates modules from Toyota’s Mirai car, the first mass-produced hydrogen fuel-cell car in the world; these cells have been used in large trucks and Tokyo’s buses for the past five years. The Yanmar boat, weighing 7.9 tons, was driven by a 250kW powertrain using two modules of polymer electrolyte fuel cells…

Fast New Yanmar X47 Makes a Debut in Genoa

Yanmar just displayed its new X47 Express Cruiser, the official VIP Cruiser of the 36th America’s Cup presented by Prada, at the big Genoa boat show. Yanmar designer Ken Okuyama worked with Azimut to install three 370-hp sterndrives in the new yacht. After Genoa, the next stop for the Yanmar X47, the company’s flagship, will be the America’s Cup in Auckland, New Zealand, starting March 6. It will offer VIPs a fast ride to the course and then a luxurious viewing platform to enjoy the races. Power for the X47 comes from three Yanmar 8LV turbo diesels with XT370 sterndrives,…

Former Gunboat Sailboat Salvaged, Rebuilt as 64-foot Power Cat

Here’s a story of restoration, renewal and rebirth, of a state-of-the-art sailing catamaran that ran into a storm 200 miles off the coast of North Carolina, lost its mast, and then floated in the Atlantic for 14 months until it was salvaged, taken to the U.K. and redesigned into a 64-foot power cat. (See the video below.) The boat started out as hull number one of the Gunboat 55 series, named Rainmaker. On Jan. 30, 2015, its owner, Brian Cohen, an investor in Pinterest, his son, and three professional crewmembers were sailing it from the Gunboat yard in North Carolina…

Toyota and Yanmar Develop Hydrogen-Powered Concept Cruiser

Toyota and Yanmar have joined forces to create a hydrogen-powered, zero-emissions concept yacht. The new boat uses the high-pressure hydrogen fuel-cell from Toyota’s Mirai sedan as its powertrain. The two companies say the yacht will have smooth, emission-free cruising with “a superior cruising range.” For its part, Yanmar says its goal is to develop an environmentally friendly hydrogen fuel-cell system for a variety of marine vessels. It hopes to install the new H2 system and start demo testing later this year. The Mirai system is well-proven in the automotive market. Toyota launched its Mirai (which means “future” in Japanese) sedan…

Yanmar Developing Faster, Safer, Autonomous Offshore Boat

Yanmar is moving ahead quickly in the field of creating a totally autonomous blue-water boat, one that navigates and docks all on its own. The company already has developed a docking system that works much faster than a previous version, and an offshore nav system that seems much safer. Yanmar is concentrating on its autonomous marine technology largely because of labor shortages in Japan’s fisheries industries – at a time when the marine aquaculture industry is booming in Asia. The engine builder wants to create a vessel that can serve the fishing fleet without the need to put a crew…

New Greenline 45 Fly: A Comfortable Hybrid Cruiser

The new Greenline 45 Fly, the latest addition to the Slovenian builder’s hybrid fleet, was just shown at the Miami boat show in February. It has many power options, but with Volvo’s IPS600 pod drives it tops out 30 knots. Under all-electric power, it tops out at 6.5 knots, but those miles go by in peace and quiet, leaving behind zero carbon footprint. The new Greenline is meant to provide lots of cruising comfort, with many social areas, a light-filled interior, and a basic two-stateroom, two-head accommodations plan. The hull and exterior design are by J&J Design in Slovenia, with…

Leopard 53 PC Makes Well-Received Debut in Miami

Walking through the salon of the Leopard 53, which just made its debut at the Miami show, I was not surprised by the amount of space inside the new power cat. I had expected that; after all, the boat has a beam of more than 25 feet. But I was surprised by the amount of light that beamed in. There are panoramic windows all around, and the interior décor is all light in color and modern in design, so that it’s both inviting and soothing at the same time. It would be easy to feel at home on this new…
