Yanmar just announced that it is building a new flagship X47 Express cruiser that will have more than a fleeting reference to world-class automobile design. Indeed, Ken Okuyama, who designed the new Yanmar X47, also worked for Pininfarina for many years, and in 2016 transformed a Ferrari 599 to the customized kode57 (see picture above), although only five were ever built. The X47 Express is scheduled to be launched at the end of this year, and it already has been named the Official VIP Cruiser of the next America’s Cup in Auckland, New Zealand. Yanmar Launches Robot Boat and New Self-Docking System. See the Video

There’s more news on the self-docking front. Volvo and Raymarine have already demonstrated their autonomous docking systems, where the boats essentially dock themselves. Now Yanmar has announced its own system, and you can see how it works in the video below. The Yanmar system is an outgrowth of its experimental “autonomous surface vessel,” a robotic drone boat that Yanmar developed with the Japan Agency for Marine-Earth Science and Technology (JAMSTEC), pictured above. It’s 14’ 5” long, weighs 3,600 pounds and can run for 48 hours at speeds up to 5 knots without anyone on board. It also can right itself…

New ARROW460-Granturismo: Built Like a Luxury Mercedes

The first time that the predecessor of Mercedes-Benz designed a boat was back in 1888, when Gottlieb Daimler built a launch for Otto von Bismarck, powered by Daimler’s new one-cylinder internal combustion engine. The engine burned benzene, and the boat was named Mercedes, after the daughter of one of Daimler’s investors. We all know what happened to Mercedes-Benz after that. Now the German luxury car maker has teamed up with Silver Arrows Marine in the south of France and Yanmar, the Japanese diesel manufacturer, to launch a totally new 46-foot boat called the ARROW460-Granturismo, designed (somewhat) after Mercedes’ Silver Arrows…

More Details and Performance Charts for Yanmar’s New 50-hp Diesel Outboard

Production has started on the innovative Yanmar Dtorque 111 50-hp, common-rail, turbo-diesel outboard, which the company says is the world’s first viable diesel outboard. The new outboard was developed as a Neander-Shark engine; Neander Motors, based in Kiel, Germany, on the Baltic, specializes in producing small capacity diesels with two con-rods per piston. The new outboard has two counter-rotating crankshafts in a lightweight aluminum block to create a perfect balance, free of vibration. The diesel outboards are lighter and more compact than traditional gas outboards of the same size. The company says they have twice the engine life, up to…

Yanmar says this is the world’s smallest diesel outboard with common-rail fuel injection, providing class-leading range, fuel efficiency, exhaust emissions and noise levels. The new compact outboard has an engine life of at least 10,000 hours, according to the company, more than double the lifespan of a comparable gas outboard. The diesel is smooth and quiet, delivering 50-hp at the prop with a torque output of 111…

True North 38: Still the Downeast SUV of the Water

The original SUV of the water, the True North 38 made by USWatercraft in Warren, RI, combines its signature Downeast looks with 25-knot performance and a unique use of space. The True North’s sharp plumb bow parts the waves, its tumblehome suggests a lobster-boat heritage, and its long sheer line mirrors the classic appeal of Alerion sailboats that USWatercraft also makes. What further sets the True North apart is the spacious cockpit and transom doors that open so you can slide in a dinghy, a small sailboat or simply enjoy diving and watersports. With the transom doors open, it’s one…
