Caterpillar has announced that it’s making a new 2400-hp, triple-turbo diesel that’s the most powerful 12-cylinder marine diesel on the market. New from the block up, the C32B Triple Turbo offers more power, faster acceleration and less noise than Cat’s previous engines, according to the company. Last year, Cat introduced the C32B marine diesel, rated at 2000 bhp (or 2025 mhp). The new triple-turbo engine is rated at 2400 bhp (or 2433 mph) at a speed of 2300 rpm. Cat says the engine is designed for use in large yachts and sportfishing boats, and for repowering applications. The new engine…

Silent-Yachts is working on a new solar-electric 62 tri-deck catamaran, and the innovative Austrian builder has already sold three of them, two to Americans and one to a European. The new 62 is based on the platform of Silent’s popular 60, but with two additional feet aft and with the third deck, providing another level of space. The new yacht also will have a lot of carbon fiber to reduce weight. The self-sufficient cat has 42 solar panels, providing 17kWp, two 250kW electric motors and a battery capacity of 210kWh. The yacht has a cruising speed of 6 to 8…

Here’s a new concept from Evo Yachts in Naples, Italy: A 79-feet-long combination of a sailboat and powerboat, with four helm stations, an aft “beach” area that’s just above the water, and an entirely new way of looking at the cruising experience. The new yacht is called the Evo V8, the first model in Evo’s new V line. Valerio Rivellini, the Neapolitan yacht designer, says the Evo V8 is at the intersection of sail and power. “Motor yacht owners begin their holiday when they reach their destination, either at anchor or in port,” he says, “whereas sailing yacht owners start…

Here’s some timely advice from BoatUS about how to get your VHF ready for the season: ANNAPOLIS, Md., March 23, 2021 – In recreational boating, cellphones are just fine for routine communications. So why do you need a VHF radio – either a handheld or fixed mount – on your boat? Because in an emergency it’s the only thing that can directly connect you to the U.S. Coast Guard’s Rescue 21 system, giving you access to high-tech emergency response and Digital Selective Calling (DSC) capabilities that can hasten your rescue. All you have to do now is to ensure VHF…

The picture above, taken from a U.S. Coast Guard helicopter, shows all that remained of La Dolce Vita, a 100-foot Hargrave, after it caught fire and burned near the Marquesas Keys, about 17 miles west of Key West, Florida. All six people on the yacht at the time abandoned ship on the yacht’s tender and were escorted to shore by a Coast Guard response boat. They were not injured. The fiberglass boat burned to the waterline and then sank. The Coast Guard is overseeing a cleanup of the diesel spill; the yacht was holding as much as 4,500 gallons of…

NOAA RESEARCH NEWS: Climate change is causing significant impacts on the Great Lakes and the surrounding region. As the largest surface freshwater system in the world, the Great Lakes have an enormous impact, seen and unseen, on the more than 34 million people who live within their collective basin. Because of their unique response to environmental conditions, Earth’s large lakes are considered by scientists as key sentinels of climate change. A long-term study published in Nature Communications today from NOAA reveals a warming trend in deepwater temperatures that foreshadows profound ecological change on the horizon. While less visible than the loss…

Authorities in Norway have given the final approval to start construction of the Stad Ship Tunnel, the first tunnel for ships in the world. The tunnel will be a mile long, cutting through the narrowest part of the Stad peninsula, and will let ships bypass the Stadhavet Sea, one of the most dangerous spots on the Norwegian coast with 100 storms a year. The Norwegian Coastal Administration, which is in charge of the tunnel, says there are some other tunnels for smaller vessels in the world, but none for large ships. The Stad tunnel will be 83’ 6” wide and…

Make no mistake. Bertram is still making serious fishing boats, including some battlewagons, in fact. But it’s also making more versatile boats, vessels that can be equally at  home fishing far offshore or cruising on the ICW or even on the Great Loop. Take a look at the new Bertram 50 Express, for example. Powered by optional twin MAN V12, 1,550-hp diesels it can head to the any fishing grounds offshore at 45 knots. Dial back a bit, swap out the tackle center for two mezzanine seats, add a swim platform and stay with the standard power of twin 1,150-hp…
