If you’re looking for power, pure power, the new CAT C32B’s got it – in spades. Indeed, this latest high-performance marine diesel from Caterpillar has 2025-hp, or 5 percent more than previous C32 engines. But it looks the same and has the same connection points and footprint, making it attractive for both new builds and repowering options. New from the block up, the C32B is built to run at wide-open throttle up to 8 percent of the time. Cat says this is at least 3 percent longer than competing engines can run at that speed. The C32B also delivers more muscle…

Scania, the large Swedish manufacturer of engines for boats, trucks and industrial applications,  just announced that it’s entering the North American pleasure boat market with two large 900- and 1,150-hp diesel engines. Both are fully emissions certified for the U.S. market, and both are designed for cruising and sport fishing boats. The powerful and lightweight engines have leading power-to-weight ratios, according to the company. The 900-hp engine is a six-cylinder, 13-liter in-line version, and the 1,150-hp engine is a 16-liter V-8 (see picture at top). Both are built on a compacted graphite iron block and use a simple wastegate turbocharger.…

Yamaha is starting sea trials on Aug. 7 on its revolutionary electric drive system that provides greater maneuverability, faster turning, and less vibration and noise than possible on most conventional drives. Yamaha says its new HARMO drive package is a “next generation control system platform” with an electric motor, a remote-control box, and a joystick. It generates about 10-hp and is available in single or twin applications. A major innovation is that the  prop is not driven through a central axle, as it is in conventional motors. Instead, HARMO has a Drive By Rim motor, where a ring of sequentially-activated…

BMW is working with OXE Marine to produce a co-branded 300-hp diesel outboard. OXE, a Swedish outboard company, already uses a BMW six-cylinder, bi-turbo diesel engine for its OXE300-Bison outboard. Under a new agreement, OXE said it will work with BMW to deliver the co-branded 300-hp outboards as “products of unprecedented power, reliability and endurance.” OXE also said it would continue to produce its 200-hp outboard through next year, based on a GM motor, but it also will test a marinized BMW powerhead as the same time to see if it can produce enough horsepower and torque while meeting emission…

Evoy, an innovative Norwegian company, is developing a 150-hp, all electric outboard, the largest electric outboard in the world.  Evoy is working with two other companies, Hurtigruten and Frybendø Marine, for the new outboard, and will be testing it this fall with hopes of introducing it to the market early next year. Started in 2018, Evoy has already developed inboard electric propulsion for commercial boats, going up to 800 hp. Now it’s turning that technology to the outboard market. The new zero-emissions Evoy Pro 150-hp outboard is built to be installed on Hurtigruten’s smaller tenders. It is specifically designed to…

The innovative ePropulsion Spirit 1.0 Plus 3-hp electric outboard is now available in the United States. Mack Boring is the distributor on the East Coast; Four Seas on the West Coast. The new outboard is lightweight, easy to use, and produces no vibration, emissions or exhaust. The company says it provides enough power to match a four-stroke 3-hp gasoline outboard, and that it’s capable of powering a 10-foot tender or up to a 3,000 pound daysailor. Better yet: It floats! The ePropulsion outboard has an innovative prop design and significant battery capacity. Indeed, it has a 1276Wh battery, the largest…

After three years of R&D, Yamaha just introduced the first joystick for boats with a single outboard. Until now, joystick controls were available only on boats with multiple engines. Yamaha’s new Helm Master EX makes it easier for drivers of single-outboard boats to control and steer their vessels. It gives captains fingertip control of steering, throttle and shifting. With its power steering, you can turn the motor from lock-to-lock in less than two seconds. You maneuver the joystick in easy intervals. One short twist equals 1 degree of heading. A long twist produces 5 degrees of heading. A hold-and-twist repositions…

Cox Marine, based in Shoreham-by-Sea in the U.K.,  just won approval from the Environmental Protection Agency to sell its new 300-hp diesel outboard, the most powerful diesel outboard in the world, in the U.S. The new outboard had to meet the EPA’s full Tier 3 emissions standards to be approved for both commercial and recreational applications in the U.S. Cox says it will start shipping the new diesels to the U.S. by the end of the month. The company says the diesel outboard burns 25 percent less fuel and has three times the lifespan when compared to a gas outboard with…

Here’s some great advice from Captain John at Skipper Tips about how to make your small diesel engine last longer and perform better. Read on: Do you go through a step-by-step inspection of your engine before you hit the “start” button? Make sure you check these seven vital components before you do. This could add years of life to your sailboat’s diesel workhorse. 1. Oil. Use this double-dip technique. Pull the dip-stick out and wipe it off. Push it back in all the way so that it gets to the bottom of the oil sump. Pull it out and look…

Yamaha’s new portable F25 outboard is a great answer for cruising people looking for lightweight power for a RIB or a dinghy or perhaps for a second boat. Yamaha says the new F25 is the lightest 25-hp outboard on the market; indeed, it’s a full 25 percent lighter than Yamaha’s previous version. The 15-inch shaft model of the F25 weighs 126 pounds. The 20-inch shaft model weighs 143 pounds. Both models come in two-stroke or four-stroke versions, with remote or manual starting systems. The manual-start version does not require a battery, which makes it particularly attractive for a RIB or…
