Beneteau Installs Garmin Assisted Docking

Beneteau has become the first boat builder to incorporate Garmin’s Surround View assisted docking technology on a production boat, its upscale Gran Turismo 45 cruiser. Surround View will be available on all of those models now, and will probably roll out to other Beneteau models as well. The Garmin system has six cameras on the Gran Turismo so the captain can have a view of all angles of the boat, as well as an overhead bird’s-eye view, all appearing on the boat’s MFD at the helm. Both Beneteau and Garmin say the system gives the captain more confidence while docking…

Quebec: Cruise To a Piece of France

If you want to give yourself a treat this summer, take a trip up to Quebec, specifically Quebec City. With its rich history, vibrant French culture and large, modern marina, it’s one of the most alluring cruising destinations I’ve ever experienced. In the case of Quebec, getting there is half the fun. In 2014, George Sass, Sr., the photographer, and I cruised 495 nm from New York City (actually, Liberty Landing on the New Jersey side, across from downtown Manhattan) to Quebec City, going up the Hudson to Lake Champlain and then entering Canada. Lake Champlain itself is a great…

This latest and largest Axopar is long, low and lean, with a beam of only 13’ 6” and it shares the company’s increasingly popular lineup of fast boats that now starts at 22 feet. The innovative builder from Finland says the 45 is aimed at owners who want the same adventuresome spirit of smaller Axopars, but with more interior volume and deck space. Axopar says the 45 is an alternative to larger and…

Nordhavn Building New 71 for Owner-Operators

Nordhavn is now building hull number one of its totally new 71-foot passagemaker designed for owner-operators to be able to cross oceans or go just about anywhere else they have in mind. It’s been about two years since Nordhavn started thinking about the 71, and the company has been talking to its owners and working on the design and engineering with its in-house Computational Fluid Dynamics program. The idea was to fill a hole in the Nordhavn lineup at the upper end of the mid-size range, for owners who want to move up in size but still run the boat…

New Intermarine 24M Sets New Bar

Intermarine, the large Brazilian builder, has unveiled its sleek, new 81-foot luxury motoryacht that takes the trend of creating onboard beach clubs and balconies to a new level. The new yacht, called the Intermarine 24M, was designed by Luiz de Basto, of DeBasto Designs in Miami, who specializes in creating graceful large yachts. With the Intermarine 24M, he succeeded, since the side and aft terraces, even when deployed, don’t seem to interrupt the sweeping lines of the yacht. They do, however, create lots more usable space for everyone on board. The new Intermarine carries the fairly conventional low profile of…

MJM Building New 42 Couples Cruiser

MJM just announced that it’s making a new 42, an all-weather, all-conditions 48-knot cruiser with what the company calls a “Carolina Downeast” design and more than a touch of class. The company, now based in Washington, North Carolina, says the 42 is the evolution of a couple’s liveaboard performance cruiser. They developed it with Michael Peters, the Sarasota designer who’s done everything from Hinckleys and superyachts to speedboats, and input from the owners of MJM 40s, one of the builder’s most popular cruisers. The 42’s helm deck is enclosed for total climate control and comfort, but it can be opened…

Miami Tiki Hut Captain Busted!

The Coast Guard and other law enforcement authorities have cracked down on illegal boat charters in Miami lately. They cited the captain of a 53-foot powerboat near the Miami River on the same charges. And they busted the captain of a 15-foot floating Tiki Hut, also near the Miami River, for operating an uninspected passenger vessel, as well as operating under the influence of alcohol The Coast Guard said that a Coast Guard law enforcement team from Miami…
