An American fisherman who had been missing or 13 days in the Pacific was found by a passing fishing boat off the coast of Vancouver Island in Canada. Ryan Planes and his uncle, John, both from Sooke, British Columbia, were out fishing when they thought they saw something in the water. They were about 60 miles northwest of the Strait of Juan de Fuca that separates the U.S. from Canada. It was a life raft, and the man on the raft fired off a flare. The Planes picked him up. It turned out that he had been on the raft…
Nordhavn is putting the final touches on its first new 51 long-range cruiser at its plant in Turkey. The 51 is a larger version of the well-received 41 that Nordhavn launched in the summer of 2020. Both the 51 and the 41 are the first Nordhavns to be built in Turkey, where a streamlined production process does not allow for the individual customization that’s available on other Nordhavns that are made in Taiwan and China. The new 51 has two staterooms and two heads, a flybridge and an elevated pilothouse, all representing upgrades from the 41. Powered by twin 160-hp…
You’re coming into a harbor and your electronics aren’t working (believe me, it happens). You need to figure out how far away you are from making a landfall. Here is some great advice from Skipper Tips about how to figure this out on your own: In a pitch black night, you squint through the binoculars to try to pick up Libby Island lighthouse off the rugged coastline of Maine. The nautical GPS shows you dead on track and the light should be visible from 18 miles (note the abbreviation 18M). Right now, you estimate you are just about 18 nautical…
If you’re looking for a new way to get on and off your yacht (after all, helicopters are so déclassé – and noisy), or you just want the latest over-the-top high-tech toy, consider the new Acro eVTOL, just unveiled at the Monaco yacht show. The eVTOL (electric vertical take-off and landing) concept was presented by Klissarov Design, a studio on the French Riviera that specializes in pushing the boundaries of vehicle design. It developed the eVTOL specifically for the yachting market, where the demand for new adventures (think personal submarines, high-latitude expedition yachts) has been growing lately. Weighing just 400…
Cruisers Yachts just announced that they’re planning an all-new Flybridge series, an evolution of their popular Cantius line. The new Flybridge line will have three yachts, starting with 55 Fly. Cruisers says the 55 will incorporate new technology and will have a sleek exterior look, resembling a spaceship on the water. The look, the company says, was inspired by marine predators. The 55 Fly will be a new boat from the keel up. The interior was designed by Luiz De Basto of De Basto Designs in Miami; he usually works on superyachts. The new boat’s design theme, the company says,…
Pardo just unveiled its new flagship, a 75 T-Top, with clean uber-modern lines, a slightly reversed bow, and a transformer-type transom that folds out again and again. The new, Italian-built 75 features a walkaround layout on the main deck for easy cruising and a carbon-fiber T-top that protects the central helm and lounging area. An upper galley is aft on the starboard side with a dry bar. A three-person seat faces the helm. The foredeck is a major relaxing area, with a large lounge and table centered and a sun pad forward. The major social area, however, is all the…
Azimut is introducing its sleek, sporty and sophisticated 71-foot S7 to the U.S. market this week at the Fort Lauderdale International Boat Show. The upscale Italian yard says the S7, powered by three 800-hp Volvo IPS1050 pod drives, is an eco-sport yacht, since it uses 30 percent less fuel, and produces 30 percent fewer emissions, than a shaft-driven boat of the same size. It has a top speed of 35 knots and a cruising speed of 27 knots. Azimut has used a lot of carbon fiber in the superstructure and the flybridge of the S7 to reduce weight and lower…
A San Francisco startup has launched a new Valo Hyperfoil, built with a combination of carbon fiber, titanium and stainless steel, that flies over the water at 35 knots, leaving no noise, emissions or wake behind. Boundary Layer Technologies, the company, says the Valo “is a high-performance, semi-autonomous, electric hydrofoiling vehicle with wings to fly above the water. Think of it as jet ski, but 1,000 times more awesome.” The Valo Hyperfoil is about 11’ 6” long and weighs 595 pounds. It flies, or foils, at about 13 knots. Then it can fly for about two hours on a single…
