Spirit Launches Long-Range Electric Foiling Boat

Spirit Yachts and BAR Technologies just launched their classic, retro-styled 35-foot foiling boat with a range of 100 nm at its cruising speed of 22 knots. The companies say that is the longest range for an electric boat yet. Top speed is 30 knots. Spirit built the new SpiritBARTech35EF at its yard in Ipswich, UK, while BAR used its America’s Cup experience to design the hull and develop both the foiling technology and electric powertrain. (BAR worked with Sir Ben Ainslie’s foiling America’s Cup boats.) The 35 has a narrow, 7’ 6” beam and a modified deep-V hull with a…

Ex-Tesla Engineer Making 800-hp Electric Boat

John Yo thinks he has a better idea. Yo, 51, the former head of global manufacturing for Tesla who escaped from Vietnam when he was 16, is working on a 30-foot electric boat with two 400-hp motors, far more horsepower than other electric boats of this size. His new boat, called the R30, will have a top speed of about 40 knots and a range of a few hours at its cruising speed of 20 knots. A prototype will be ready in October; the first production boats are scheduled to be delivered in the spring of 2024. Chuan (John) Yo…

Candela Building Foiling Electric Center Console

Candela just announced that it’s building a new 29-foot foiling boat that it says will be the first all-electric center console in the world. The new C-8 CC uses the same high-tech platform as the Candela Daycruiser that was unveiled at the Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas last January. Candela says the Daycruiser is now the best-selling electric boat in the world, with more than 150 orders. An innovative Swedish builder, Candela now wants to enter the center-console market, the largest segment in the U.S., with more than 50,000 boats sold last year. The C-8 CC has two seats…

Performance e801: “Fastest Electric Boat in the World”

Performance Marine, the German builders, just introduced their new 26-foot e801 all-electric boat that they say is “die schnellste e-powerboat der welt,” the fastest electric boat in the world. In fact, the new e801 tops out at more than 50 knots – at least for some brief bursts. The Performance e801 is driven by an Evoy Hurricane 300+kW liquid-cooled inboard electric motor (Evoy already makes the world’s most powerful outboard); Evoy says it’s the equivalent of 400-hp. The boat has a waterproof 63.1-kWh dual battery pack configuration, working with a Mercury Bravo One sterndrive. The boat has a range of…

Chris-Craft Unveils New Electric Boat

The cause of electric power for recreational boats got a big boost from one of America’s most famous boat companies at the Miami Show. Chris-Craft, which calls itself “America’s boatbuilder” and which has been in business since 1874, announced that it’s making an electric-powered 25-foot prototype as a test platform for a fleet of electric boats in the future. The new boat, called the Launch 25 GTe, will be powered by a 420-hp EVOA electric motor, paired to a sterndrive. The boat is projected to have a 43-knot top speed and a two-hour running time. It works with a 133-kWh…

New All-Electric 20-Knot Quadrofoil

Here’s a fun, new, all-electric foiling craft that looks something like a cross between a jet ski and a waterborne sports car. Indeed, the Quadrofoil Q2S from Slovenia can foil, or “fly,” at about 6 knots, and it can cruise for about two hours at its top speed of 20 knots. You drive it with a steering wheel that feels like an Audi, and the cockpit features high-end ergonomics inspired by the European auto industry. The Quadrofoil Q2S is driven by a 5.5kW electric motor that’s powered by two 5.2kWh lithium-ion batteries. You can charge it from a standard 110V…

All-Electric Voltari 260 Cruises to Bimini

A 26-foot, carbon-fiber, all-electric boat just set a record of sorts by cruising 91 miles from Key Largo in Florida to Bimini in the Bahamas on one charge. Although the Voltari 260 is a high-performance vessel with a top speed of 60 mph, it crept along at less than 5 mph on the Bimini trip so it would not run out of juice. The trip took about 20 hours. Built in Canada, the Voltari 260 is made with aerospace-grade carbon fiber for maximum strength and efficiency. It weighs just 7,000 pounds and is powered by a 142kWh Lithium-ion battery pack…

New Electric Persico Zagato 100.2

Let’s face it: A lot of the early electric-powered boats were, well, to put it charitably, aesthetically challenged. Not so the new Persico Zagato 100.2, unveiled last week at Zagato’s headquarters in Milan. Zagato’s announcement called it “an innovative hyperboat featuring aesthetic purity of design,” combining Persico’s technology, electric jet propulsion, and Zagato’s supercar-like looks. A little history: The boat’s100.2 nomenclature celebrates Zagato’s second century in business. It was founded “to dress cars and planes with customized bodywork,” and its most famous designs include work for Aston Martin, Lamborghini, and Alfa Romeo, among many others. The new 26-foot Persico Zagato…

Prototype All-Electric Axopar at Dusseldorf Show

Axopar will display its prototype 25-footer, powered by an EVOY 300-hp electric outboard, at the Düsseldorf show, starting Jan. 21. The all-electric Axopar runs for 25 minutes at 25 knots, and the batteries can be recharged in an hour. Jan-Erik Vitalia, the founding partner of Axopar, says the partnership of the two companies was designed “to expand the boating community and offer new ways of mobility for the future.” The prototype boat was designed to cruise with zero emissions, zero fumes, and almost no noise. The prototype used EVOY’s 300-hp electric motor, the largest available, with low consumption, high torque…
