Lyman Building New Monhegan 42 by Hunt

Lyman-Morse in Thomaston, Maine, is building a new semi-custom version of the Ray Hunt-designed Monhegan 42, a seakindly, fast and comfortable cruising yacht. The new Monhegan was designed as a commuter yacht, carrying passengers back and forth to a corporate island retreat on Lake Ontario. It has seating for 12 on settees in the salon, plus eight more in the cockpit. Below, the arrangement could not be more simple; there’s a small head and lots of cargo space for luggage. Hunt has designed the Monhegan 42 in four configurations: Flybridge, Cruiser, Extended Hardtop Cruiser, and Open. They’re all available with…

Ever Forward Pilot on Cell Phone: Coast Guard

There’s a moral here for all of us. The Coast Guard just issued its report about the grounding of the 1,095-foot-long Ever Forward in the Chesapeake last March, and it’s devastating. Its conclusion: The grounding was caused by the “failure to maintain situational awareness and attention while navigating, and inadequate bridge resource management.” The problem: The pilot was on his cell phone. But he was hardly alone. The ship’s master had left the bridge half an hour before the grounding to get dinner, but still on the bridge, along with the pilot, were the Third Officer, a Deck Cadet, and…

Ocean Reef Vintage Weekend: Classic Fun

The Ocean Reef Club’s annual Vintage Weekend just ended, and it was the usual high-spirited mix of classic boats, cars and planes with parties, dances, costumes and a generally good time. Founded in 1993 as a private club, Ocean Reef is one of the better yachting destinations in the world. It’s not far below Miami on Key Largo, and it has a world-class marina, two golf courses, a private airport, lots of tennis courts, a spa, and a large outdoor swimming pool and beach area. There are also several restaurants and bars. I once spent the New Year’s holiday there…
