Sea-Doo Unveils New Electric Foiling Rise

If you think a stand-up paddleboard is fun, take a look at the new all-electric foiling Rise that Sea-Doo just unveiled at its annual dealer meeting in Canada. The new Rise is different from most existing foiling boards in that it can be fun for the entire family, transitioning from a basic surfboard to a flying-above-the-water, adrenaline-pumping foiler as the rider gains experience or confidence. You can enjoy it on the water without foiling, if you’re starting out, riding on your knees or even lying down. The handlebar is retractable so you can decide when you want to use it…

One man was killed and his brother was injured when their 23-foot fishing boat collided with a 154-foot Coast Guard cutter about 4 nm off the north coast of Puerto Rico on Monday. Coast Guard: Help Wanted

The Coast Guard needs to find more recruits and then give them better housing, health care, child care and support services, according to Coast Guard Commandant Adm. Linda Fagan. Adm. Fagan has been the Coast Guard’s commandant since May; she is the first woman to lead a branch of the military in the United States. She testified recently before a House Coast Guard and Maritime Transportation subcommittee. “My highest priority as commandant is to transform our talent management system, which has not significantly changed in 75 years, to better serve our people in the 21st century,” she said. The Coast…

Elling Launches New 65 Long-Range Cruiser

Elling Yachts in The Netherlands has launched its new flagship, a 65-foot, luxurious long-range cruiser. Powered by a single 900-hp Volvo, the new E6 has a range of 2,500 at 9 knots, and 1,000 nm at 15 knots. That’s enough, the company says, to cruise from Amsterdam to Iceland on one tank of fuel. Even if Iceland is not on your cruising plans, you can still go from New York to Miami, say, without bothering to stop at a fuel dock along the way. And, with Elling’s low-slung profile, you could even duck inside and go under some bridges on…

Twin Disc Launches Express Docking System

Twin Disc just introduced its new Express Joystick System that makes docking much easier for owners of shaft-drive boats. Indeed, the new system gives you fingertip control of your boat’s speed and direction from multiple stations on board. The Racine, Wisconsin, builder says the patented Express Joystick System simultaneously actuates and controls the engines, transmission and thrusters so you can move the boat in any direction. You just twist the knob, and the boat rotates on its center axis, giving you precise control while docking or maneuvering at low speeds. And the movements are seamless and instantaneous. The new system…

NOAA Update: Above-Average Hurricane Season

We’ve been lucky so far, but that may change before too long, according to the new mid-season hurricane estimate from NOAA. So far, the Atlantic hurricane season, which runs from June 1 through Nov. 30, has seen just three named storms and no hurricanes. But now we’re heading into the peak hurricane months, and NOAA (the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration) is calling for an above-average season for the months ahead. This recent update is similar to NOAA’s original forecast, in May, but now forecasters say the likelihood of an above-normal season is 60 percent; the original forecast was 65…

Desolation Sound: Beautiful Cruising Grounds

One of the premiere cruising destinations on the West Coast, Desolation Sound, despite its name, is pretty easy to get to. It’s just 93 miles above the city of Vancouver, and getting there is half the fun. For those of us starting from the Seattle area, you just head up past the San Juans, cross the border to the Canadian Gulf Islands, go past Princess Louisa Inlet, and you’ll get there. Keep Vancouver Island on your port side, mainland British Columbia to starboard. Desolation Sound is a destination in its own right, but it also serves as a gateway to…
