It’s been a busy week or so for sharks off Cape Cod and even the nearby islands of Martha’s Vineyard and Nantucket. Last Saturday, for example, nine great whites were spotted near just one buoy off North Beach Island; that’s located on the elbow of the Cape, near Chatham. The same day, the Nantucket harbormaster closed Ladies Beach for a few hours after a shark sighting there; authorities also closed the Miacomet and Cisco beaches on the island as well because of sharks. And a lifeguard on Martha’s Vineyard ordered a beach closed there after he saw a shark. It’s…

A British yacht owner died and his wife and daughter were seriously injured when their 70-foot yacht crashed into some rocks on a small island off Sardinia, Italy, on Saturday night. Dean Kronsbein, 61, was thrown off the deck of his yacht by the impact of the crash. He was pulled out of the water alive, but died of a heart attack on his way back to shore. His wife, Sabine, 59, and daughter, Sophia, 27, were also seriously injured. Sabine told investigators that the yacht’s captain had to swerve suddenly when another boat headed for them as speed. The…
NOAA is proposing new speed limits to protect North Atlantic right whales. Here’s NOAA’s announcement last week: Today, NOAA Fisheries announced proposed changes to vessel speed regulations to further protect North Atlantic right whales from death and serious injuries resulting from collisions — part of a multifaceted approach to stabilize and recover this endangered population. The changes would expand the current mandatory seasonal speed restrictions of 10 knots or less in designated areas of the ocean and extend to most vessels measuring 35 to 65 feet in length. In addition, the agency is releasing a draft “roadmap” for public comment about…
Chief Petty Officer Feco, who was honored at a ceremony in Washington, D.C., this spring, just retired from the Coast Guard in another ceremony at the Coast Guard base in Alameda, California. Feco, a nine-year-old Hungarian Vizsla, joined the Coast Guard in 2014, and has been a member of its San Francisco Canine Explosive Detection Team ever since. Over the years, Feco and his lead handler, Petty Officer 1st Class Cory Sumner, have participated in more than 1,500 events, including such high profile gatherings as several Super Bowls, major league baseball games, golf tournaments and Fleet Week. They also have…
HanseYachts AG, the giant German builder, has launched a new powerboat line called RYCK, starting with the versatile and highly customizable RYCK 280. The new RYCK, named after the river that flows from the Hanse yard in Greifswald to the Baltic, can hold eight people and tops out at about 40 knots when powered with a 300-hp Mercury Verado outboard. It was designed by Bill Dixon, the British naval architect who has developed leading power- and sail-boats for many years. For its part, Hanse is one of the world’s largest boat manufacturers, building Hanse, Dehler and Moody brands for sail…
A 68-foot fishing trawler hit the midsection of a 965-foot cruise liner about 40 nm east of Nantucket early Saturday morning. The Coast Guard said it received a call at 2:25 a.m. reporting the accident. One person on the fishing boat, the Gabby G, was injured and treated at the scene. No one was injured on the Norwegian Pearl cruise ship, which was on a voyage from Boston to Bermuda. The collision caused some damage to the Gabby G, and chipped some paint on the Norwegian Pearl. The Gabby G returned to its home port of New Bedford, Massachusetts, arriving…
Jeanneau just announced that it will display its new flagship 40-foot NC Weekender, a 40-foot cruiser with three 300-hp Yamaha outboards, at this fall’s boat shows in the U.S. The new boat, officially the NC 1295, has signature panoramic windows all around the salon, a large flybridge, a terrace that folds out of the starboard side of the cockpit, and three cabins and two heads below. Part of France’s giant Beneteau Group, Jeanneau is building the NC 1295 to meet the growing desire for outboard-powered cruising boats in the U.S., while also incorporating other trends, including the desire for several…
The Sunseeker 65 Sport Yacht is sleek enough and powerful enough to turn heads in harbors around the world, but now, just to make sure that no one fails to take notice, it is offered with a custom gold paint job. Sunseekers, of course, are made in the UK. Not surprisingly, a new gold model has been sold to an owner in Southern California. Depending on the light, it’s not really a gold color. In fact, Sunseeker officially calls it a Custom Bronze. Whatever. Sunseeker launched the 65 Sport Yacht a year ago, and it has already won an award…
A Dutch startup named Tanaruz has created a new way to make boats, recycle them, and then build you a new one using material from the old one when you want to move up. Tanaruz Boats has just launched its first boat, a 15-foot electric model called the Tanaruz DSI (pictured above), made by a 3D printer and a combination of polypropylene flakes with a blend of fiberglass. The flakes are melted to a heat of 200 degrees and then sprayed in a continuous stream, layer on layer. The ABB printer uses a Track Motion system and works 24 hours…
Lyman-Morse just announced that they’re building hull number two of the new Hood 35 LM at their factory in Thomaston, Maine. It’s the first of that model to have a flybridge, and it’s scheduled to be launched next spring. The flybridge boat, like the express version in hull number one, was designed by C.W. Hood Yachts in Marblehead, Massachusetts, and the lines are classic. When I first glanced at the rendering I thought of a modern, updated version of a Bertram 31, a Blackfin 32. Like those boats, the Hood 35 LM Flybridge is definitely built for performance. Power comes…
