Twin Disc just introduced its new Express Joystick System that makes docking much easier for owners of shaft-drive boats. Indeed, the new system gives you fingertip control of your boat’s speed and direction from multiple stations on board. The Racine, Wisconsin, builder says the patented Express Joystick System simultaneously actuates and controls the engines, transmission and thrusters so you can move the boat in any direction. You just twist the knob, and the boat rotates on its center axis, giving you precise control while docking or maneuvering at low speeds. And the movements are seamless and instantaneous. The new system…

We’ve been lucky so far, but that may change before too long, according to the new mid-season hurricane estimate from NOAA. So far, the Atlantic hurricane season, which runs from June 1 through Nov. 30, has seen just three named storms and no hurricanes. But now we’re heading into the peak hurricane months, and NOAA (the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration) is calling for an above-average season for the months ahead. This recent update is similar to NOAA’s original forecast, in May, but now forecasters say the likelihood of an above-normal season is 60 percent; the original forecast was 65…

Freya, a  1,300-pound young walrus, is at it again, climbing on boats in Northern Europe to rest and sunbathe, often sinking them in the process. Freya is now in Oslo, where she has become something of a celebrity, and the media have named her after the Norse goddess of love. The Norwegian Broadcasting Corporation says Freya was first sighted in the northern section of Norway in 2019, climbing on boats. Since then, she’s been seen in the UK, Netherlands, Denmark and Sweden. Last year she was found sleeping on a Dutch submarine in a naval base in the north of…

It’s been a busy week or so for sharks off Cape Cod and even the nearby islands of Martha’s Vineyard and Nantucket. Last Saturday, for example, nine great whites were spotted near just one buoy off North Beach Island; that’s located on the elbow of the Cape, near Chatham. The same day, the Nantucket harbormaster closed Ladies Beach for a few hours after a shark sighting there; authorities also closed the Miacomet and Cisco beaches on the island as well because of sharks. And a lifeguard on Martha’s Vineyard ordered a beach closed there after he saw a shark. It’s…

The…

NOAA is proposing new speed limits to protect North Atlantic right whales. Here’s NOAA’s announcement last week: Today, NOAA Fisheries announced proposed changes to vessel speed regulations to further protect North Atlantic right whales from death and serious injuries resulting from collisions — part of a multifaceted approach to stabilize and recover this endangered population. The changes would expand the current mandatory seasonal speed restrictions of 10 knots or less in designated areas of the ocean and extend to most vessels measuring 35 to 65 feet in length. In addition, the agency is releasing a draft “roadmap” for public comment about…
