Meet the All-Electric Cybercat With a Tesla

Maybe it’s the pandemic; maybe it’s too many glasses of wine, or maybe it’s just a very creative mind at work. In any event, here’s a look at the new Cybercat all-electric amphibious boat, using a not-yet-made Tesla Cybertruck. The Cybercat, and its upgrade, the Cybercat Foiler, are the products of Anthony Diamond’s fertile mind. Diamond, a young entrepreneur from the Seattle area, has an engineering PhD from the University of California at Berkeley, and an engineering BS from Stanford. He was featured in Forbes list of 30 Under 30 in 2017. Just as relevant, Diamond drives a Tesla and…

GM Gives Big Boost To Electric Boats

General Motors just gave a big boost to electric boating when Pure Watercraft, with the help of a major investment from GM, unveiled its electric-powered pontoon boat at the Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas. Founded 11 years ago in Seattle, Pure Watercraft says it wants to disrupt the boating industry with its new electric outboard motors. GM, the automotive giant, bought a 25 percent stake in Pure Watercraft in November, investing $150 million. GM said its goal was to help create a new generation of zero-emissions boats. The new pontoon boat that Pure Watercraft just unveiled is 24’ 7”…

GM Invests $150 Million in Electric Outboards

General Motors just invested $150 million in Pure Watercraft, the Seattle-based company that makes electric outboards and battery packs. The investment represents a 25 percent stake in the company. Pure Watercraft, founded by Andy Rebele nine years ago, makes all-electric Pure Outboards as a drop-in replacement for boats that use 25- to 50-hp gas outboards. It also has partnerships with manufacturers to sell complete electric boats, in the RIB, pontoon boat and small fishing boat categories. The Pure Outboard operates with a 25kW electric motor that the company says is the equivalent of a 50-hp gas outboard. It is built…

Lyman-Morse To Build Electric, Foiling, Navier 27

Navier Boat is a Silicon Valley startup; it has lots of dreams, but it hasn’t built a boat yet. Lyman-Morse, in Camden and Thomaston, Maine, has lots of dreams too, and it’s been building Down East and high-tech sail and power boats since 1978. Now, Navier and Lyman-Morse have formed a partnership. Lyman-Morse will build Navier’s first boat, a 27-foot, carbon-fiber, electric-powered, foiling power boat to be unveiled at the Fort Lauderdale show next October. Production models will be ready at the start of 2023. Powered by two 50kW electric motors, the Navier 27 will foil, or fly, three or…

Zodiac, Torqeedo Launch Electric-Powered RIBS

In a major move for electric-powered small boats, Zodiac and Torqeedo just announced that they are collaborating in a new eOPEN range of Zodiac RIBs with electric power by Torqeedo. Zodiac, the largest name in RIBs, and Torqeedo, the largest name in electric boat motors, will introduce the new eOPEN range at the Cannes Yachting Festival starting Sept. 7. There will be more details at that time. Zodiac already has made an inroad in the electric power market, winning a Gussies Electric Boat Award last year for its eJET450, an under 26-foot RIB designed specifically as a tender for large…

Hodgdon Building Two New Electric-Powered Tenders

Hodgdon, the historic Maine builder, just announced that it’s building new all-electric tenders, on the same hull as its diesel-powered 10.5-meter and 12-meter Venetian line of luxury tenders. The new tenders will use Vita Power’s high-performance powertrains with dual-prop stern drives. The 10.5-meter (about 34 feet) will use a single electric motor and three Lithium-ion batteries. The 12-meter (abut 39 feet) will have twin motors and four batteries. The range for both boats is about 20 to 50 nm, depending on speed and sea conditions. The batteries on both boats can be charged from the mothership, using AC or DC…

New Battery Cells Can Change Electric Boating

Here’s an intriguing story about a new type of battery that could change the face of electric-powered boats. As reported by Forbes, the new graphene aluminum-ion battery cells charge faster, are safer and will provide more range than existing lithium-ion cells. Read about them here: Range anxiety, recycling and fast-charging fears could all be consigned to electric-vehicle history with a nanotech-driven Australian battery invention. The graphene aluminum-ion battery cells from the Brisbane-based Graphene Manufacturing Group (GMG) are claimed to charge up to 60 times faster than the best lithium-ion cells and hold three time the energy of the best aluminum-based…
