Nordhavn 76 Crosses Atlantic, Lands in Barbados

The Spirit of Ulysses, a Nordhavn 76, just completed a 2,000-nm transatlantic voyage, arriving in Barbados on Sunday, Dec. 19, just 17 days after it left Lanzarote in the Canary Islands. But then the five members of the crew had to wait six hours on the boat for a doctor to arrive and give them a Covid clearance. Once that happened, they tied up in Port St. Charles and took off for a celebratory dinner in a beachside restaurant. There was much to celebrate. Ulysses, a 2007 model, was the first boat that Mike Ridgway ever owned. A retired computer…

Nordhavn 76 Completing Epic Transatlantic Voyage

The Spirit of Ulysses, a Nordhavn 76, is within days of the finish line of its epic 2,000-nm transatlantic voyage from the Canary Islands to Barbados. If conditions hold, the crew now expects to make landfall in Barbados on Sunday morning. Ulysses, a 2007 Nordhavn with twin 400-hp Detroits, left Lanzarote in the Canary Islands on Dec. 3 and almost immediately ran into some gnarly conditions, including wind gusts up to 53 knots and sea swells from 10 to 15 feet. At first the crew couldn’t even land a Dorado they hooked up, and cooking and eating was problematic. After…

Nordhavn 76 Crossing Atlantic; Follow Along

The Spirit of Ulysses, a 2007 Nordhavn 76, has started a 2,000 nm transatlantic crossing from the Canary Islands to Barbados, and already has powered through 50-knot winds and some boisterous seas. The boat just finished the first leg of the trip, from Lanzarote in the Canary Islands to Cape Verde, where the crew headed straight for the fuel dock and took on 2,260 gallons of diesel. (See a video of the arrival below.) They also did some grocery shopping, got tested for Covid (all negative) and prepared for the rest of the trip. They hope to land in Barbados…

Nordhavn Launches New 80 at FLIBS

Nordhavn is having the world-wide debut of its new 80 at the Fort Lauderdale show, as well as displaying its new 41, the smallest cruiser in its legendary blue-water fleet. The new Nordhavn 80 is something of a departure for the company; it looks a bit more like a superyacht than like most previous Nordhavns. Jeff Leishman, Nordhavn’s design chief, drew the 80 with straighter lines, larger windows, thinner mullions, and generally more of a contemporary European influence than was visible in Nordhavns in the past. If you think this Nordhavn is different, consider the hot tub on the extended…

Shipping a Nordhavn 59 from Florida to Mexico: Video

In June, Larry McCullough and his wife, Jamie, shipped their Nordhavn 59, Independence, from North Palm Beach, Florida, to La Paz, Mexico, and McCullough made a first-rate video of the entire experience. He calls it the good, the bad, and the ugly. It deals with the entire experience, including dealing with brokers, preparing the boat for shipment, and the condition of the boat once it arrived in La Paz. He told me he hoped that other owners could learn from his experience. The McCulloughs are experienced boat owners, and they bought Independence, hull number one of the Nordhavn 59 Coastal…

Teenager Writes About Living on Nordhavn 47

For the past two years, Salter Watson, 14, has lived on Spirited Away, a Nordhavn 47, with his father, Alex. Salter has been “boat-schooling,” while he and his father are on a three-year plan to cruise the Great Lakes, the East Coast, and even the Bahamas. When he has time, Salter writes a blog. Here’s his latest, a knowledgeable discussion of the merits of anchoring out or staying at marinas while cruising, an issue that we’ve all faced over the years: Having just completed our second year as live-aboards and looking back at thousands of photos we’ve taken so far,…

After Four Years, Dirona Comes Home to U.S.

After four years of cruising in Europe, James and Jennifer Hamilton (and their cat, Spitfire), are back home. Earlier this week, they tied up Dirona, their 2009 Nordhavn 52, in Charleston, South Carolina, after a 2,922-nm , 19-day leg from Horta in the Azores. “It’s great to be home,” James wrote on their blog, mvdirona.com. They cleared customs, got their first Covid vaccinations two hours after landing, and picked up dozens of Amazon packages that were waiting for them. The Hamiltons, who had already completed a circumnavigation, left Newport, Rhode Island, in May, 2017, and cruised through northern Europe for…

Hamiltons in Mid-Atlantic, Heading Home on Nordhavn 52

After cruising in northern Europe for the past four years, James and Jennifer Hamilton are heading back home to the United States on their Nordhavn 52, Dirona. They’re now in mid-Atlantic, about half way between their last stop, Horta in the Azores, and their final destination, Charleston, South Carolina. The Hamiltons already have a circumnavigation and two Atlantic crossings under Dirona’s hull. A high-tech couple from Seattle, they bought Dirona new in 2009 and have been living aboard and cruising since 2012. On this latest venture, they left Newport, Rhode Island, in May, 2017, and have been cruising in the…

NAPS: Largest Gathering of Nordhavns Ever

Nordhavn owners got together in Poulsbo, Washington, last week, for their annual event called Nordhavn Across Puget Sound (NAPS). As it turned out, 37 Nordhavns came to the Port of Poulsbo Marina, and 13 more Nordhavn owners came without their boats. This was the largest gathering of Nordhavns ever, and more probably would have come except the border with Canada is closed because of the Covid-19 crisis. The NAPS rendezvous was started by Nordhavn owners in 2018 simply as a way to get together and share notes about their boats, stories about their adventures, and plans for voyages to come.…

The Williams, Veteran Cruisers, Buy a Grand Banks 60

Ken and Roberta Williams have a lot of blue-water miles under their hulls. Indeed, the Williams have crossed the Atlantic and the Pacific and cruised just about everywhere from Alaska to Turkey on their two Nordhavns, first a 62 and then a 68, both named Sans Souci. They sold the 68 a few years ago and spent last summer writing books. Ken’s was about Sierra On-Line, the computer-game company they started together and sold in 1996; Roberta’s was a historical novel about Ireland. But cruising beckoned. For their new boat, they downsized, to a Grand Banks 60 (pictured above), even…
